United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Baltic Blue
Yesterday I put my 110 up on ramps to clean underneath, did the rear took the 110 off ramps and drove back up forward.
As I got to the top there was a bang and I had lost the drive. I could hear something turning underneath as if a shaft was turning. Is this the fault you guys are talking about?

Sorry to hear of this happened.
Not sure so much it was us talking about it or folk not listening Whistle
At least it happened close to home with no tow trucks involved, little consolation but we must look at the positives.
Don't' forget a picture once it's apart, I'm starting to suspect it's occurring where the sirclip is not fully engaged on both sides. Cheers,

Yes I was lucky I had been away at the week end caravanning which had broken then it would have been a lot of trouble getting 110 and caravan recovered.

It is likely to be.

Get the vehicle safely back on the ground, and with the help of an assistant if possible put it in gear on tickover with the handbrake off but footbrake hard on and look underneath. If either propshaft is rotating, then something's failed in the axle that the rotating propshaft is connected to (halfshaft/drive flange failures are common).

If neither propshaft is rotating, then it is most likely to be the output adaptor shaft as discussed in this thread, although it could be a gearbox or transfer box failure. Output shaft failures are far more common though.

As for a recall, I think that there is virtually zero chance of that. There is an ever decreasing number of Defender still under warranty, and if LR didn't do a recall when the vehicle was in production they certainly won't now. Although we hear of a totally unacceptable number of failures of this shaft, I haven't heard of a single failure (at least not yet) where people have died as a result. At the moment the failures are hugely inconvenient (and expensive) for the owner but the safety implications are largely theroetical. As I have seaid before, I doubt that there will be any interest from LR unless there is a very serious incident and the media picks up that LR have known about this since 2007 and done nothing effective - for example a broken Defender derailing a train on a level crossing. Then there might be a reaction.

Please note that I am not saying that this is right nor acceptable, I think that LR should have engineering a proper solution to this second-rate and inadequate design, and at the very least fitted it free of charge to customers who requested it (like they did with the 2007 TDCi sump problem, though they only did that during the warranty period).

Not LR's finest moment by any means.

The problem seems to be the splines on the half shaft and the adaptor rear offside (I think that's what it was called). A new adaptor and shaft have been ordered and I have to go and pick them up tomorrow.

This may be a stupid question but I do not understand why the landy would not drive forward as I thought they had
4 wheel drive and I thought the front wheels would have still turned and pulled the vehicle forward.

Secondly if I had selected locked dif could I have driven on slowly in get home mode? I have always been warned about driving on the road in dif lock.

yes with that failure diff lock would have got you home just fine in front wheel drive, it would not cause any damage to centre diff as the rear would not be driving or winding up the transmission DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I grease it when I do the prop UJs, once every few months.

Seems to be working, I find I get no clunk, or drive train noise like I used to Wink

Drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the casing.

Can be a bit tricky to get the grease nipples to the correct point, but it seems to work ok! Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Took mine into the main dealers the morning. Shaft hasn't failed but a leaking rear crank seal means it's gearbox is coming out anyway - and I've got loads of backlash.

Dealer is checking the shaft and nodded knowingly when I mentioned it as being the most likely cause of the backlash.

I'll report back on what they find... Dave

So, if someone breaks down with this issue, they can just engage the diff lock, and even, as in my case, I had 200ks to go, there'd be no damage, even with that broken spline/coupling whirring around?
Any limit on the speed you can travel at?
