Scotland 2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Tamar Blue
Another output shaft failure...
Had quite a bit of backlash and play since I got it, but today when changing gear, I would take up drive and then a second or so later there would be a clunk noise (i.e. after the slack take up 'normal' clunk, and when I was already moving). Had read enough on here thankfully to realize what was about to happen!

Happened a few times and I got to within a mile of home and then bang and rattly whirring noise and no drive....very lucky to have a good mate come and pick me up! For interest, 2012 2.2ltr with 41k on the clock.

Sorry to hear that. 41 K! The horrible thing is there is no ryme or reason as to how long a shaft will last. We will be doing a several thousand K trip towing a 2.5 T trailer soon, and already Iīm thinking what to do in the event....

I just shake my head when I read of these failures that need not hapen.
The owners hand book shows it should be greased but it's been missed at the factory.

I've got a 3 week remote trip coming up where we'll be towing also.
After reading similar threads I'm glad I dropped the transfer off to check, mine was dry also. Cheers,
Kyle.

That's not good, how does LR get away with it!

Are you going to replace it with the Ashcroft parts or greased original parts?

Keep us updated. Cheers Andy

No idea!

I'm going to go for the original parts and just make sure it's greased very well and seated correctly!

Will post pics once out.

Cheers,

Fish.

JLR's official response as stated in this very forum is scandalous given the obvious defect in the assembly of the intermediate shaft and how many people have suffered failure and subsequent personal inconvenience as a result.

^^^^ Yes, but a 'dealer' sounds far to 'common' for modern day LR now. Laughing Rolling Eyes

Well, the speed at which our Geneva JLR "dealer" are selling Eeewoks, RRS, FFRR, you could call them "wholesalers", but the speed at which they are selling Jaguars makes them "retailers" again. Dilemma Laughing You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
