Ah right, Well We named ours Gracie, simply because We thought it was a nice old fashioned English name!,..."old fashioned",...just like the Defender!!
But funnily enough, and this had nothing to do with how we picked the name, our sales lady's name was Gracy! (with a "Y") Pickles. |

If you strip a drive flange( I carry a spare as it fits all 4 corners) you can drive them home.
Ideally on the rear you remove the axles and tail shaft and drive with the diff lock in so it becomes front wheel drive. If it's on the front and the axle splines are ok I would take flange from the rear and do as above. If the axle is damaged I'd be inclined to leave the flange off and fill the gap somehow to stop the oil/grease escaping, still need to drop the tail shaft to stop the diff turning. Lock the diff for rear wheel drive. It's a lot more work to remove the axle. Cheers, Kyle. |

Good tip Alien, thanks. I picked up a drive shaft and flange yesterday and it was replaced. The land rover was put in for its MOT. It was picked up on corroded break lines, one was replaced last week. I hope to have the vehicle wax oiled and the pipes changed Monday or Tuesday.

Well, I won't find out what the dealers think for a week because they've unfortunately messed me about. Despite notifying them of the work required well in advance, they can't start work for a week. To say I'm miffed would be an understatement... This is supposedly a premier main dealer about 10 miles away from the factory... ...and about 5 miles away from JLR HQ... Right, got Gracie back today.
First order of business - the intermediate shaft. I didn't get to see it, but as expected - NO grease in it. Not a large amount of wear on it apparently, but it was worn and I can tell the difference now that it has been replaced under warranty. And yes they greased it this time, unlike JLR! Hopefully that should see it last the lifetime of the clutch - at which point the shaft will be inspected again. Once it's out of warranty I'll get an Ashcroft one fitted. The clutch was also replaced and the very slight rattle at idle has been eradicated, as well as the slightly variable bit point. And finally the engine rear crank seal was replaced. That took two attempts at fitting by the dealer; the replacement leaked on the test drive. So gearbox out yet again and this time the seal was fitted with sealant in accordance with a Topix article. So far it's leak-free... Now that I know what a part-worn intermediate shaft feels like to drive, I'll be able to detect the same symptoms in future. In summary Gracie is now really, really nice to drive again I had a silly grin on my face on the way home - I thoroughly disliked the Discovery Sport courtesy car and it was great to be back in Gracie. sounds like a plan ....just don't like them big numbers.
but hopefully you're getting what you pay for - some thing good? ....or doesn't it just mean the failure will occur on the female side instead? |

I see they state "made to OEM standards"....... surely that means it's not up to much the same as the LR/Ford product? I'm just going to have an original shaft from the stealers put in (but not by them) with plenty of grease to make it last a couple of years.
Hopefully in that time the Cook will agree to me flogging the thing and we can buy something decent......but what? AlanH. |
