Back together now and it drives like a car, very smooth compared to how it was before. When I bought it, there was a lot of backlash, but I had no idea how much, compared to what it is like with new parts.

Thats good news.
Interested in... Did they fit OEM standard replacement parts? Did they 'grease' the output shaft? YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

I understand from my local Indy that since mid way through 2015 the splines have been greased with some sort of blue anti scuffing paste, time will tell if this is a robust fix.

Mine is a June MY15...
If I wanted my JLR dealer to check if mine had been done, any idea of what is involved and how long that job would take? Peace of mind and all that...! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

I believe that if you give them the VIN number they could tell you if its had this modification, certainly my Indy checked mine and he said it would have been done.

Interesting...
Can you clarify... is this an 'official' JLR cited modification that is required to be done? Cheers, Pete. YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

I don't think its a recall Pete but from what I understand the factory started applying this anti scuff paste from mid 2015 I assume due to the reported failures. I think if I had a Puma built before mid 2015 I think I would be asking the dealer if they would as a goodwill gesture carry out this mod.

There have been a couple of posts about a blue drip from the gearbox/transfer box area onto the floor so this sounds plausible. on my Jan 2016 model I had a blue stain in the same area which I just wiped off. Looks like mine has some grease on it |

^^ Thread on this blue grease is below. Have been following those threads both on here and on aulro.com, and looks like this grease really was applied during assembly in the last 3 months only. Why it is leaking out for a while right from new never got clarified.
Eric http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42448....lue+grease You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I think I will do this... good idea thanks! To save too much 'trolling'... do you happen to know what is the recommended type of grease please? It would be good to use the same blue/green stuff that late build owners have reported 'leaking' out... (that sounds to me like it is not very viscous..?) How long does it take to get to the output shaft anyway? YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

The owners book lists the type of grease(I don't have access to mine at the moment).
It was recommend to me to use "one shot grease" as used in the swivel housings. It would be a full day's work to drop the transfer, inspect/grease the shaft and refit the transfer. Add delays if parts have to be sourced. Most shops would want it for 2 days to cover themselves. Subject to mileage I'd consider asking about changing the O rings on the intermediate shaft and inspecting the centre diff shims. Cheers, Kyle. |
