I am not denegrading women paragliding. My point is that compared to the brochures for the 90/110 and the tdi the portrayal of users of the vehicle has changed. The current brochure does have a working vehicle element to it but the focus is primarily leisure. Previous brochures were all about work. In earlier years a dedicated "county" brochure was issued aimed at the leisure type used whereas today it is all incorporated into one vehicle brochure.
I'm glad to see women portrayed as owners/users of the Defender as it dispels the myth that the vehicle is hard to drive and only fit for big macho male types. My wife drives a 110 Puma. She still gets asked "is it hard to drive?". She says "No" as she can manouver it into the tightest of spaces. This is because she learned how to drive in a 110 tdi, passed her test first time in a 110 tdi and has NEVER driven anything other than a 110. I'm just saying that over the years (decades even) I've seen the advertising of the vehicle changing. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

I agree with Spudfan yet again. Over recent years there has certainly been more of a push to get the Defender to appeal as a lifestyle choice. Ok it's another market sector to harvest but go too far that way and the product looses the very reason for it's original existence.
You only have to observe this forum to see the number of people who appear saying they've just bought a new one as they have always fancied one based on their image ...but ooooohhh isn't it noisy, why do the mats turn into foot spa's when it rains, just how do you work the high / low lever - and what's the centre diff for anyway? Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Somewhat anecdotal, but still the number one reason why utility customers I've met say they don't use a Defender is reliability. The reputation there is not great (rightly or wrongly, you decide). Price is also a factor in some markets where Defenders are very expensive. Normally businesses would go "Ah, we have a problem with our product", and work to make it better in order to not lose that market (after all, Land Rover used to completely own the utility 4x4 market). For whatever reason that has not happened here, with predictable results. I don't think Land Rover have lost that market completely, and the stories from that market really help build the brand, but they haven't exactly done that much to retain it either. |

^^ Detroit. Would make a lot of sense, as that is the most important market they need to recover.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

2004 Santorini Black TD5 110 XS SW left hooker for sale! 2004 Alpine White TD5 110 left hooker (work in progress) |

I'd have thought it would just be the next big show scheduled after some key date in the Defender development programme; maybe nice if this aligns with Frankfurt as the European market will still be the main core market maybe.

Well some of that makes sense - Slovakia for production.
Recent announcements moved projected volume up from 50,000 to 100,000. There's no space for that volume at either Solihull or Halewood and no new production plants in UK announced. Austrian contract production is said to be 50,000 and mooted to be specialist electric/hybrid tech. So assuming China and Brazil are producing only for local markets as has been previously stated, then that just leaves the new plant in Slovakia. Producton start would obviously have to wait until the plant is built! |
