Haven't JLR signed an agreement with Magna Steyr in Austria for some production (possibly Defender?)
this is the same company who builds the Mercedes G-Wagon and the Pinzgauer. http://expeditionportal.com/the-new-land-r...n-austria/ If they can put the build quality of a G-Wagon into a Defender I would have thought your looking at something pretty special aren't you? |

It may sound weird to some but I'd quite like a hybrid electrical capability so I can sneak around the countryside quietly (ish). 2.2 90 XS

Conversation at the R and D dept. at JLR.
"Hey Jerry, there's a few dozen Defender nuts on the Defender2.net site who want to be able to hose out the replacement Defender, do home servicing and pass the vehicle onto their grand children. On the other hand there are a couple of hundred thousand potential purchasers who want to look as if they are going to cross the Sahara in the vehicle, generally pay to have the vehicle valeted and want to upgrade it every 18 months. What market are we going to go for?" No wonder JLR are taking their time to come up with a replacement. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Pertinent observations I think a number Def2 members would also fall into the second catagory. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Maybe Martin can have better statistics but Def2 have +/- 9,200 members (impressive anyway) of wich only 5,300 have wrote at least 1 post. Only 700 have more than 100 post, 100 have more than 1,000 post and 45 have more than 2,000 posts. That pure bean counting model has, however, decimated many businesses and industries in the past. There are also a finite number of people who want to buy pretend 4x4s, which is why several manufactures cater for the utility space there as well.
Part of building a brand is building things that people aspire to. The Defender has, for long, been that aspirational object, even when people end up buying another Rover. Doesn't mean development should stop — quite the opposite, in fact. It is clear Defender sales could be higher, with an improved product. But it's important to realise why Land Rover is such an amazing brand. It contains at least the notion that you could go out there having adventures in Aftica and saving elephants. That feeling is there even when you sit in your cocooned Freelander. It makes the brand credible. |

Talking about credibility: Why did Land Rover give up their utility vehicles?
Honestly: Utilities won't come back with Land Rover. Be sure about it. They're gonna give us a fun car bto in six different constellations ( but not modular any more ) It's a shame. |

The Land Rover per se from the 88/109 to the 90/110 and the Defender have always been primarily a utility vehicle and advertised as such. Have a look at the sales brochures. They were tweeked to make them appear suitable as family cars i.e. the " county " models. The advertising slant changed with the Puma brochure which concentrated on the "civilised" aspect of the vehicles. There are even photos of girls paragliding with the Puma in the foreground. No photos of farmers with dogs, no bare chested hairy men driving a 110 pickup in the dirt. Land Rover has firmly nailed it's colours to the mast regarding the direction they are going with the Defender. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

^^ Same here. Plenty of working situation pictures in my MY15 Defender brochure. Maybe has been looking into an Eeewok brochure? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

To be honest, I think women paragliding is a perfectly valid use for a utility type vehicle. At least it's not footballers or their wives conquering the challenges of Chelsea. |
