The BBC kind of speculates that the utility days will be over.

OK not a good source but apparent quotes from Gery McG:
EXPECT a new Defender in 2018 that's "more sophisticated" but just as capable. Design chief Gerry McGovern said: "This car will look the b*******! "I assure you. The absolute dog's b*******. You will look at it and say 'that's a modern-day Defender'. "We've moved it on from the DC100 concept (above) and I think we've got something that's even more desirable - and affordable." http://www.sunmotors.co.uk/news/whats-next...-defender/ |

I like the last paragraph in the article "Defenders are sprayed with 343 high-pressure water jets for 14 minutes to check for leaks in the Monsoon Chamber" Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

I am still impressed no magazine or motoring hack has gotten ANY shots of its replacement. The testing must be well underway for 2018 delivery? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Maybe they have seen it but don't recognise it as a Defender? Think of the Discovery when it was launched and the model currently on sale today. Or indeed the Range Rover when launched and the current model. The replacement Defender will probably have as much in common with the present model as the aforementioned vehicles have with with their antecedents. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

I would imagine any testing will be on test mules.
Think Disco or range rover body shell running with defender mechanicals. Just a guess, but would make some sense. I would imagine body shell testing will be done very soon to official launch, this is a highly anticipated vehicle Cheers Andy |

Good point ROBBONTHEROCK, you never know, all these pictures of these convertable Ewoks might actually be test mules for the new Defender 90. They're testing a basic model version that can have a full tilt put on later
I wonder if Exmoor Trim have had the dimensions yet to start cutting canvas for the roll up sides on the convertable Ewok yet? |

You are assuming that there's a difference between New Defender running gear and Disco or RR. It could well be that there isn't. Talk of mules amuses me, We all assume that there are no mules out there because no-one's indentified one. It seems to me that there's a possibility that they are out there but look so similar to the other bland and generic products in the line-up that no-one's noticed them or realised what they're seeing. Time will tell. |

Judging by the DC100 proportions which were more upright than anything LR currently produces, we would recognise a disguised one if we saw one. They will definitely be using Discovery platforms to test drive trains for the new Defender, but will eventually have pre production bodies of the new vehicle to test. Two years before production is still early but during the course of this year we can expect to see something we recognise. In disguised form, the front end will look similar to others, but my guess is that the upright tailgate, relatively upright side glass and upright mirrors should give it away. I was openly critical to the LR staff at the Frankfurt Show when I first saw the concept. Not that an individual's opinion makes a difference, but there was a lot of criticism and I am sure they expected it anyway. I believe they have done their homework and will deliver an excellent Defender for the modern world. Twisted and co. Will rub their hands together and start creating the versions that are missing, and a new chapter begins...... 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

I would think as soon as they shift all the existing defenders in the dealer network the leak photo will appear somewhere so the hype can begin in earnest:whistle:
