Fairly straight forward but you'll need a 52mm socket or box spanner. As long as you get all the parts (or just buy a kit) then it shouldn't take you more than an hour or so to do. I'd do both sides though to be sure.
K9f will probably be along soon with some links to follow...... |

Cheers Lambley.
I take it the 2004 doesn't have spacers ? Haynes manual a bit confusing ? Duncan |

Click on the link to my blog at the bottom of this post. Got to "front hub seal replacement" and I've linked to an excellent YouTube tutorial. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

I would change it to the older system without spacer between the bearings and 2 nuts with a lock ring. Works better I think. Roel

Is a 52mm 1/2 socket with a breaker bar enough to get the nut off ? When putting it back on will I get enough torque from a normal torque wrench ?

No in fact it is less work than the new standard with the spacer in the middle as you probably need multiple spacer and try to find the right one to get the right bearing play. With the old system with no spacer you tighten the first nut, loosen it a little and then tighten it to the right play/resistance. then you put the lock ring and the second nut and tighten it. bend the lock rig over and ready. No mayor other parts needed just instead of the lock nut 2 flat nuts and a lock ring. ![]() I thought if I replaced everything I could use the spacer provided with the kit ? And this would give the correct float. ? Damn ! This is proving to be harder than I thought ? So a 3/4 inch socket then ? Might take it to a garage ! Scared now ![]() |

If you use new decent (i.e. Timken) bearings chances are you won't need to change anything as the spacer is set by the tolerances in machining the hub and the bearings are made to tighter tolerances than that. However you will still need to check and be prepared for the fact that it could be out.
To change to the older system you just need to get the two lock nuts and the locking and thrust washers with your new bearing and set it up as normal. Have a look through an older parts manual and you'll see what's needed. Calipers are a 12-point bolt, not hex. Should be Loctited. |

The used set is the newer system, the new set is the older system. Is it clear what I am saying as it sounds strange.
