On the original nut it's where the machined section of the nut is hammered to contact the flat of the stub axle.

There shouldn't be play in the swivel housing. How are you detecting play?

Cheers Roel

Fifth , still don't know what you mean, cant see anything on the nut ?

If I grab the disk, once I had tighten up the nut there seemed to be play from the swivel housing ? I assume there shouldn't and that is f'k to ?

if the nut looked undamaged like this

when you took it off then its not surprising it was loose - the only surprise is that the wheel hadn't fallen off Shocked

The machined part should have been deformed to make contact with the machined flat on the stub axle.

The play in the swivel may be able to be adjusted - there are shims under the top pin. The workshop manual tells you how, there used to be one in the galleries.

So which way round does it go on ? With the machine part towards the stub axle ie inwards ? My nut looks just like your picture ? has it been put on back to front ?

Machined part outwards then when tightened up tap the thinner machined part onto the flat part of the thread on the stub so it has to push out the hammered bit before it can turn/loosen.

You've got it, it might have just had a light tap when it was done originally and the shape has been put back by the action of taking it off.
As a bit of consolation for you, I set about replacing the swivel bearings today on my NSF. This is the only wheel on my motor with the single nut/spacer set up for the wheel bearings. I have the complete service history for my motor and there is no mention of any wheel bearing changes prior to my ownership, now in its 5th year. I've replaced the OSF but that was the 2 nut and locking washer and I replaced like for like. I've had to tighten the rear wheel bearings and know they're the same. The NSF(single nut job) has never given me any reason to adjust or touch before today and when I took it apart it too was just sat there with no sign of it ever being tapped down onto the flat on the stub Rolling Eyes

That is just because the washer behind it has also a flat pieces and shouldn't be able to rotate. Roel

It's intrigues me that the WSM is very clear in stating the the stub axle should be fitted with the flat at the twelve-o'clock position, it at the top, both for the TD5 and TDCi. I have never yet come across an unmodified ex-factory vehicle which has had it fitted in this way, always just at some random position.

I don't see that it actually makes any difference except that it is possible harder to stake and unstake if not at the top.

So to stake it I just hit it with a bit blunt instrument to bend the machined bit flat ?
