Narrowing down the problem-Overheating
Ok so you may have seen my last post about being not sure about whether my 110 was overheating or not, I'm now certain it is.

The facts:
Its been recently remapped but I'm not sure this is actually a factor as I've also done a lot more driving recently so could just be a coincidence.

Using the OBD diagnostics/realtime gauges app it seems to be running at 92-97 most of the time, reaching 100+ on A roads around 60, sometimes as high as 110/115 at which point the gauge on the dash jumps straight into the red (doesn't climb slowly, think this is the way the gauge works though) and goes into limp mode. After a few seconds (literally maybe 10-15 seconds) it drops back to level steadily (doesn't just flick like it does on the way up) and normal driving is resumed.

This never seems to happen under load or at speeds less than 30 or higher than 65, never once had it happen on a motorway, and I've even been up long hard hills at 75+ to see if i can get it to go. It just doesn't seem to happen under load!

Often after a long period of motorway driving ill pull onto a 50/60mph road and it'll overheat.

However, after any journey long enough to get up to temperature you can hear the water in the expansion tank bubbling away and all feels very hot and sometimes smells hot too. If on a journey it gets very hot then ill often see hot steam/water vent from the expansion tank lid and the level will be low when it cools down.


This is the gauge after a few (1-2) minutes of ticking over after driving slowly home one day, 91 seems too hot for tick over after a few minutes, and note the 108.0 high. This has been 114.3 on one journey when it went into limp mode.

I don't like to drive it at the moment incase I do some (expensive!) damage, but I'm at uni anyway so not a problem but i'd like to get it sorted.


What do we think?

so far I've:

- given everything a clean (rads, fan etc)

- run the engine with fan cowl/cover off(tickover), the fan appears to be working ok although i can't tell what speed etc it should be running, can just tell that it does in fact turn at tickover

- topped up water and run it, topped up again to make sure that the whole system does in fact have water in, the level stays fine unless it starts to get really hot.

- I've ordered a new engine temperature sensor because i suspected that at first, although i think its fine (clearly it is overheating and the OBD gauge is giving sensible readings, not playing up or anything)



Finally i also have error code P1103 (MAF high but within range) but have had this forever, seems to be a common nuisance code, is it worth replacing MAF anyway? can't see how its related.


What are your suggestions? May have to take it to the dealers sometime although they always seem to make everything cost 100s/1000s of Łs!


Curveball, im an AA member. If i say that my car overheated on the road and call them out, might whoever turns up give me some free advice?

K9F - it's CSK stage 2, so fairly tried and tested.

MK - does the tdci have a thermostat? It was dead obvious on my 200tdi, atop the radiator if I remember? Maybe ill ring up guy salmon and have a chat with an engineer.

How would I check the viscous coupling on the fan? (I'm assuming that's the viscous coupling you're talking about) - as I said the fan does turn ok, or at least at tickover. Cheers, David

Not knocking anyones ability or product at all but as a process of elimination revert back to standard and see where you lie would be my first port of call, probably the easiest first step too. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

The fan would likely be thermostatically switched / controlled, is the fan working at all?

Reverting back to standard tune involves a 4 hour drive and a 4 hour drive back! Haha. Will get down to Chris again at some point in the future though, but i can't think how it could make much of a difference really, especially not under load.

I would start by changing the expansion cap, and then the thermostat.

Do you have air con?

the thermostat is a remote thermostat , so it's on the pipes not the engine look for a round plastic unit with 2 pipes in and 1 out , sure it's on n/s , not easy to check as there a sealed unit even if you put it in boiling water you can't see into it

can't see it anything to do with cap , if it was a weak cap it would be blowing water out

bit hard to check vicous fan , it will go round on tickover but should drive harder when the centre heats up so not easy to see how hot the centre is getting

with the bas remap you can load the std map on with the little box you get , could the remap be upsetting the temp reading ?
how long after remap did it play up?

It sounds like exactly the same symptoms I had, temp gauge jumps up to max, limp mode, needle drops then normal service is resumed.

Turned out to be the relays under the drivers seat. I took them all out, re-seated them, problem never came back.

If you haven't already done it then I'd give it a go, it'll only take 10 minutes to do.

I did try this at first, found a vaguely loose relay and pushed it in but I've since come to think that it is in fact overheating. THe obd gauge shows it overheating too Cheers, David
