Sorry if I've missed an earlier post, but have you flushed the entire cooling system - from the expansion tank right down to the fuel cooler? And then re-filled the system as per the Ford workshop manual - topping up, running at 3000rpm for a numer of minutes, topping up above the level & so on?

Unless the coolant is filled as per the manual, and at the correct ratio my experience has proven that problems will follow. Too much water in the mixture will corrode your rad / other internals, potentially causing a blockage / too much coolant will rot the system.

Not telling you how to suck eggs here mate, just thought it was worth a mention. I flushed mine 6 times a few weeks ago - lots of crap came out until it ran completely clear, followed the workshop manual & touch wood no issues since.

Are your coolant pipes under a lot of pressure or can you squeeze them easily?

hi there, a point i'd not thought of...

can you point me in the direction of some instructions on how to flush the system? Does it involve draining all the coolant & replacing with new i guess? Im sure theres a sticker in the engine bay which says " Do not drain coolant! " haha... Cheers, David

the manual says to vacuum fill ,

if your going to flush system ,when you refill pour coolant in slowly it helps reduce air locks

2nd post in the above link kindly supplied by dgardel - the relevant file is in the link but for the 2.2 tdci. Mine is the 2.4 but so far the jobs I've done have been broken down step by step and have been illustrated perfectly from the 2.2 manual dgardel has provided.

There's a little yellow sticker half hanging on mine which says use genuine LR coolant, probably a safe bet Laughing !!

As munch90 rightly pointed out, it does say to vacuum fill but I didn't have the tools for this & gave it a go anyway. Releasing the breather screw does help with air locks, good point on pouring slowly too - made the mistake of pouring too quick in the past Embarassed

If you are going to change, try a good coolant flush product to lift & remove any solids flowing around the system. I found the small hose from the bottom of the radiator to the fuel cooler was preventing fluid to flow when I flushed mine.

Keep us posted on your findings,

Ok thanks all...

First job will be fitting the replacement viscous coupling & fan I've got.. Hopefully that's it,

After that the troubleshooting gets more and more vague... Hmmm Cheers, David

99% sure boiling, readout on OBD gauge, hot smell and limp mode all agree too.. Cheers, David

Slightly off topic, but is it the same spanners to remove a Tdci fan as a Td5?

Landy andy do you mean viscous fan ? If so the answer is no the Tdi is 32mm and a left hand thread and the Td5 is 36mm and right hand thread.
Hope this helps. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I don't know what the answer is, but it's worth noting that whilst you asked about the Tdci, Lou's reply was about the Tdi. It could just be a typo but could also be a completely different engine. Darren

Had something similar on my 2010my 90. Scanguage started showing variable temperature readings over 72 hrs, going upto 98c but instrument pod temperature didn't move. Then on a longer journey climbing out from Symonds Yat up a longish steep hill temp went upto 105 then down to 98 . Heater on at the time and working. Then joined A road, temp climbed to 108 on Scanguage, instrument temp shot up, limp mode and pulled into layby. AA called, no coolant loss, fan seemed to be working ok, but found radiator was stone cold, although pipes were warm. Recovered home. Local Indy, that knows car, diagnosed thermostat failed closed. Replaced and all is well. Apparently not an easy job to do. LANDYWATCH
