I asked about air con for two reasons.
1. I think when the ECU senses extreme heat it can operate the fan. Is it doing this 2. Can you wire/run aircon fan during your test to see if a bit more airflow through rad stops problem occurring. Andy |

don't think aircon fan is linked to engine ecu , think to aircon fan is controlled by pressure switches on the aircon ,
but could be disconnected from aircon then wired to run and see if it makes a change to temp , really you need to check temperature by separate way to find if indeed it is getting hot |

Radiator full of mud ? I had to remove the radiator from my old 19j after an off road foray to clear the mud out of the fins just could not do it properly in situ. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Munch - i think i can see the sensor, on the back passengers' side of the block. Looks accessible enough
Landy andy - Actually my aircon fan has been grinding and squealing recently, i assume due to lack of use. Seems to make cold air ok though, just don't turn it on unless away from nearby ears! I can try that i suppose... Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

It definitely is getting hot, can hear the coolant boiling... Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

did give it a clean with the pressure washer, seemed ok but gave it a good clean anyway. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Don't know if Puma a/c is the same as td5 but a/c fan on Td5 cut in at 28 degrees ambient. 2005 Td5 90 XS

ok this is a long shot , but is aircon fan stoping the air getting to the rad if the fan is dodgy
we had a race car that boiled as soon as the fan came on and found fan was stopping the air getting to rad during race , we had to fit a different style fan to solve it I take it that with aircon turned off it still does it ( get hot I mean ) |

yes it does it with air con off, I've not had the air con on to try actually.
I think first step may be to go see chris (I'm sure ill find something I want to buy!) and try and get the car de-mapped and give it a quick drive to just rule that out in my head. Ill never be able to shake that nagging doubt otherwise.. Then i'll go after thermostat/fan/cooling system after that's been ruled out. If you can hear the coolant boiling then it is either viscous fan, thermostat or water pump. Personally I would replace the thermostat and then if it still overheated the water pump. JMTW. ![]() Part of the EMS overheating strategy is to switch on the ac fan (where fitted) to assist the cooling, so if the ac fan is running but the ac is switched off that is a good visual indication that the EMS is enacting the overheating strategy. |

I know on a td5 you can operate the air con fan with a Nanocom. So thought it's ECU controlled.

ok thanks for the advice guys, AC fan can't make a huge difference since most cars don't have it, although maybe the AC rad being located where it is has the opposite effect.
I'll start with a visit to chris i think, always an interesting place to stop by anyway! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Just a bit of advice but I wouldn't use a pressure washer on full whack up against a radiator too much as doing so can easily bend the fins and create more problems, a decent garden hose at tap pressure is much safer
![]() FWIW I'd still want to revert to standard tune PDQ and then run through potential faults. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
