as revs go up air volume drawn in goes up , so a restriction in the air pipe should only have a effect in upper rev range . but what revs ?

Just FI:

that equation relates to fluids. But as an approximation (no more) one can think about air with it.
Flow rate is "Q" and therefore the bigger, the higher the revs. Impressively important is the diameter of the tube - as it counts in the 4th degree ("r^4").

But more important Smile any thoughts about the heater-air-box ? Smile!!

Its always got me, the length of the pipe affects it too.

Why don't we make adaptors to fit a cone inside the air box and drill some holes in the front face of the box to reduce the heat soak and let plenty air in. Surely the heat soak would be similar to the plastic pipe running (albeit a big far) close to the exhaust. I don't go dunking in water much so have no real need for the inlet to be on the wing.

Even better purchase another lid and remove the top out of it for the air and then you have two lids a sealed waterproof one and a 'high performance' one Wink William

Hi guys.

thanks for everybody who have contributed to this thread, particularly tatra805

I have replaced the factory pipe with 3" pipe and the airbox received a treatment with soldering iron with the Propeller thing removed.

outcomes are:
my puma is definitely louder with mantel steel snorkel. but this is likely due to the relocation of air entry point (near my head!)
there could be some performance gain but I don't really care. All I want is no water in the airbox, after I realized the facotry setup can even protect you from splashing... (yes, I found some water marks in the airbox after washing the fender in a puddle

My mpg doesn't seem to have changed much but then my driving style doesn't allow for mpg changes as I simply drive my truck. I do 70 on motorways and I over take using speed.

My induction mod has given me a better feel for the engine better response on throttle and less judder in gear changes. I'm sure I get a better torque range as pulling away in 2nd is much smoother since the mod too. Recently added a silencer centre pipe replacement within straight through which has also increased the smoothness of gear changes and slightly believe it or not quieter engine note

I will how ever mod my mod in the future instead utilising the wing top for the snorkel entry as a four inch pipe is a little too big for the gap above the steering column and it has rubbed a little. So my next mod is to create a Southtown style snorkel and make a new air box that will take the older style cylinder type filter cartridge this again will be sealed and will include some dorm of silicone Hosing

Apologies if I have miss understood....
I thought of this YouTube channel which test out cold air intakes which is quite interesting. (Guess my defender is a factory made racer Rolling with laughter )

No down sides to doing this mod on a td5 rhd? Any water "baffles ect" I would lose and make my engine more vulnerable? Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

Has anybody managed to replace the air intake from the wing to the air box with a larger one on a td5 with abs?
Or do any of the tuners do a kit ?

I keep looking at mine with the amount of room there is down there and keep thinking about changing the snorkel to a military type one that goes into the engine bay through the wing top blank plastic cover and bypass the lack of room issue.

what size is the tube at the airbox? (sorry dumb-ass question, but my truck is in the paintshop being bling'd otherwise I'd measure it!)

I am looking at joining this:

http://www.ppcages.com/?page_id=194

via something like this:

https://www.devon4x4.com/d44-snorkel-adapt...wards.html

to the airbox....

was thinking all 76mm (3") tubing, silicon +/- alloy for the straight bits

any hints / tips for this?

Ha funny. I was just drawing up an adapter like the D44 one... Jes... How much?????? Mating it to a mantec plastic RAI and safety devices roll cage.

Such a pity no one does a safari-like RAI to fit wit roll cages.
