Hi Pete, Do you have a DXF file for the other piece of metal work in your post? It looks like the shape of the plastic OEM intake cover. Thanks, Mark http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/ |

Am I just dumb but why is it I can't work out how to remove the impeller thing? Do you have to cut it out of something? Or was it because I didn't take the whole air box out? I took the filter out from inside and couldn't see or feel any sign of it. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

It's an easy job. I'm not saying how I did it is the rite way and I'm sure others will advise better. I just took the lid off the air box and removed filter not to forget unclipping wires from the lid Undid the jublie at each end of the pipe from air box to turbo to gain access to the dirty air feed pipe Remove the bolt that holds the dirty pipe to the inner wheel arch to give a bit of slack Then look into the air box and you will see where it lets the air in like a bit of tube patruding in, I then slid a 1/4 extension bar up inside the air box and on the top of the tube bit you can see like two plastic nipples which I pushed in with a flat head an then with the extension bar pushed the fan thing loose I then lifted the air box slightly and pushed down and wiggled the dirty air pipe and got the mrs to slide out the fan thing Then put it all back together |

Cheers, I'll have a look again soon. I must admit I only had a look really.
So the access is from underneath then?

Well I did the air box mod today, a lot bigger job and more work than I thought but I got there in the end. Not only did I remove the water separator but modified the box too. I'll try and get some photos up later.

Okay here's the photos:
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I haven't driven yet so I don't know what the difference will be, I've modified the box carefully being careful not to damage anything other than what I wanted to remove. I used a soldering iron to melt away what I wanted, time consuming and crude though and made sure I didn't breathe any fumes. In the last photo you can see what I finished it up as for now. Finished rough and I need to remove a little more of the lower collar area, but I'll tidy up the edges and make it look cleaner with a file etc when I get the chance.

Well I had a little test drive today and I agree with the previous comments about a bit more go in it in lower gears.
There generally seems to me to be a better throttle response especially if easing off and then you need to accelerate off again. Less lag there. Glad I did it now.

do your r/h Defenders also have the bloody thing of a air box/collector for the heating is in the way on the right inner wing too ?
If so - has anybody had a closer look at it and can assess whether it could be deformed (e.g. by means of a heat gun) to release some room between itself and the wing to let a bigger intake-air-pipe pass ? The idea came to be because I have a snow cover - donดt know if my thought is valid - and this cover prevents ingress of much water also. So if there was a big air collector made to aid air/water seperation, this aspect could be abundant. |
