Stupid question time....

Is this mod good for td5 only or is it possible to do something similar on earlier defenders? I.e. 200tdi?

Just had a look at my daughters 1996 300Tdi (yes we're a 2 defender family Very Happy ) and whilst the clutch pedal mounting is the same as my 1999 Td5, the standard return spring is different. The same mod could be done though as the bracketery is all the same on both cars. The odd thing is that the two bushes on the open end of the spring are already there but the bush on the pedal is not, clearly the spring is not there also! My conclusion is that yes it could be done but the 300Tdi pedal was never as heavy as the original Td5 in the first place!

Andy.

I fitted this spring to my old 300Tdi 90 (although I did build this vehicle, so used a variety of parts)#

IIRC however, my old company car (300Tdi 110 CSW) had that spring on it from new.

Did this job today on my 2001 TD5.

The only thing I would add to the thread is that not all genuine Land Rover DCP3212L bushes are created equal! One had a 3.5mm hole and slipped easily onto either end of the spring. The other had only a 2.5mm hole and had to be drilled out. Fortunately I discovered this before fitting, so it was an easy fix.

I found it tricky to get the second side of the spring into the bush, but well worth it.

Just fitted the pedal mod - only took about half hour all in, very pleased with the result.
Very good advice on here thanks to all who posted

Left leg recovering nicely
I also did mine yesterday but took a little longer due to difficulties getting access. I have the air conditioning so getting to the strip which holds the carpet is difficult so I resorted to working around it. A little frustrating but the result is very pleasing. I won't mind sitting in a traffic jam now!

Cheers all for the guidance!

Just done the pedal mod this morning. It took just over an hour to do. Funny how I love the carpets, air con, extra luxuries While I am driving, but always curse them when I work on the car, muttering things like "why fit carpets to bloody land rovers" and other such nonsense.

I haven't driven it yet but it does seem a lot lighter.

5min job
Hi just done the clutch spring and to be honest only took 5 mins,I found I could just pull rubber matting/carpet down without unscrewing the 4screws then I took old spring off and pushed clutch pedal down with 19" length of timber then popped 2 grommets in with edge of screwdriver then pushed U shaped grommet in place then long nose pliers to pop the 2 ends of spring into grommets then just pushed rubber matting/carpet up back into place and job done.
Took longer to get the tools out of shed, also just to say I ain't mechanically minded so I'm no expert but it is a simple 5 minute job.
There is an improvement in the lightness but nothing special,in my opinion.
Cheers paul

Had a look at mine and all the bushes were already there! Only had to buy a spring off ebay, about 8 quid.

Loads better! Thanks everyone.

Completed this modification this weekend! Wow what a difference, only sorry I didn't do it earlier.
I probably could've done it in about 30 -40 minutes, but as usual was faffing around with other things while I did it, so took just over an hour!

Have had this mod done. I say that as I had the parts just hadn't got around to fitting it, then became accustomed to the clutch so had the parts in a bag. Ian (IRB) spotted them and asked if I waned them fitted whilst my car was in for a Stage 2.

does make quie a difference, and worth doing...

.... especially if it gets done along with other things Wink

Did this mod today after reading the various posts on here especially from RRUK with the pics Bow down

Pedal pressure feels MUCH easier now not been for a test flight yet but i,m sure it will be a vast improvement.
Well worth the effort especially as my left knee is feeling a bit fragile after driving a thousand miles in a week on hols a couple of weeks ago.
If you have a Td5 and yours has,nt been done yet put it on your to do list. 2005 Td5 90 XS
