having little to no experience when it comes to the wiring aspect etc of it all...
have a defender 90 with a newly installed Kenwood KDC-BT92SD... first problem is, when streaming bluetooth music from my phone (iphone5) the rear speakers don't work, rest of the time they are fine... also being young due to the severe lack of quality audio, does anybody recommend a full audio upgrade have looked at twisted offerings but with twisted, i could probably achieve similar results for a much lower price is there any direct plug speaker replacements worth doing? have some money set aside for final upgrades on the car and its finished.. speakers are in on that. cheers |

@customsteve - thanks for the photo, i see what you mean about the spiral wrap
@likeomg - fitted a parrot asteriod head unit, not to everyone's taste and is quite technical but lots of good features, I am in the process of fitting a focal i20 sub (sub woofer with built in amp), the final step for me would be to replace the OEM speakers with focals. you could ask each person on the forum and each would have a different answer, it's all down to budget and your requirements. |

Only the general fitting is roughly the same for all items. âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 âï¸âï¸ |

I can probably help here. I've just bought a KDC-BT42U and had the same problem with rear speakers not working when streaming. This is a firmware issue that is easily solved. There are two things you need to do.... 1. Search Google for a firmware update for your model. These are available for download from the Kenwood site. Get a copy of the instructions on how to update them from the site while you're at it. It's pretty easy if you have pc, blank writeable CD and a CD burner. 2. You also need to change a setting in the headunit menu to change output from "front speakers" to "all". Can't remember exactly where that was in the menu but can have a look if you get stuck and advise. The update process will reset the unit so you will have to set it up again. Rusty |

Rusty's right there. With my Kenwood HU I didn't have your issue but found my music artwork wasn't showing upon screen couldn't work out why for ages but then found out I needed an update which I then did which solved it straight away. âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 âï¸âï¸

@customSteve - wires routed down back of dash, along tunnel and past seat, around back of seat and under fridge !
I know exactly what you mean now ... thanks mate (Sounds great - just wondering if I should splash out on a set of focal speakers to replace the OEMs??) |

Brill Steve it's not to bad is it at all. That's the most sensible way of doing it I could think of. Go on change the speakers you will notice the difference plus aftermarket will be more resilient and more power. Especially if they have a rubber cone as most do. I changed mine mainly due to the fact I simple wanted to in my case match brand but also there is some more power there if not RMS peak. With the OE I'd be slightly worried about blowing them at higher volumes although on the whole they aren't the worst of speakers.

Thanks for the advice on the firmware upgrade will do that, guess it will be ok burning to disc with a mac..
having read about 8-10 threads on here tonight about head units / speakers a lot of photos are missing in threads and stuff, does anyone have a good complete run down list of a sound system to fit a '10 90 hard top? i have so far a kenwood, KDC-BT92SD & standard speakers need a lot more bass and higher volume, have about £500 to spend on components, can get it wired in off my father and another 75-100 on cables, fuses, fittings etc... i do love this from the alive defender, Click image to enlarge but would it be acceptable in my price range? the back of the 90 isn't used for much bar mountain bike gear, bike goes on the back.. plenty of room in the boot. (i know it seems lazy not researching everything myself but if somebody has anything they'd like to share, id be very grateful) |
