Mine went in today for the new clutch to be fitted. Land Rover has agreed to pay 50% of the cost due to it being out of warranty and as I had reported it before the end but was told nothing was wrong with it. They have told me I will get it back today but knowing the dealers I am not holding my breath. Still as it has been parked up since we got back from Spain I will just be happy to get behind the wheel again.

I have the rattle when the engine at idle. But when I depress the clutch, the rattle goes off. Should I replace my clutch immeditely or can i wait till this gets worst.
Also what is the correct model number for the clutch kit as there are many in the market with the confusion with different price range. They swing from 90 GBP to 212 GBP. LR012199 LR012199G LR037956 |

I have had the rattle when coming to a halt/returning to idle for a period of about 6 months or so in which I must have covered 6000KM. Similarly the rattle disappeard when depressing the clutch again. The truck must have been 2 years old then, and the dealer said this is normal...
But thereafter the rattle disappeared altogether, and my clutch/gearbox work as smooth as can be ever since, which is again close to 2 years. Maybe I am just lucky until now, and I don't say that all will fare the same, so if your truck is still covered by factory warranty you might insist on them changing the clutch. If out of warranty, maybe you also want to carry on as is until the clutch really gives up, or improves consistently like mine. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Clutch Kit Part Number: LR037956 You will notice that I posted a Service Bulletin earlier in this thread. on 20 Aug LR released an update to that Service Bulletin: Technical Bulletin: LTB00477v2 (See below link) https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...0Noise.pdf In this bulletin the part number is indicated as: LR037956 Clutch Kit I think the clutch has more that one sympton 1) Clutch Rattle during IDLE - which it seems is caues by a Thrust washer failure in the clutch plate assembly 2) Viabriation when ingenine is switched of 3) During Gear changes one hear a metalic noise / perhaps clunk and gear changes is more difficult. 4) When in low gears ie (1St low range) one can hear a noise souding like the front diff drivetrain noise - Simmilar to this Show youtube video First off when my clutch was replace beginning of this year all the above was gone. What a pleassure to drive the Puma again!! When my Puma was in for the above I wrote these above 5 points on a letter for the dealer to check. I did not expect that all of these would be resolved by replacing the clutch. From early on I had issue #1 and #4. It gomes and goes. Later stages the rattle was gone and then started again. Since I was new to the Puma I thought #4 was because of the low down torque of the Diesel engine. This also become worse over time where it was not enjoyable going off road (Since I had my Puma -25000km- when I am in say 3rd (high range) and the revs drop to below 1200rpm number #4's noise/sound could be heard. After clutch replacment I can now in 3rd High, can drop the revs to below 1200rpm without the need to gear down to get rid of this noise. I saw the old clutch when it was out (kick myself for not taking pictures) - 1 Spring was almost to the point where it was falling out - Did not look at the thrust washer bit:( Regards Abrie 1997 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.8i (BMW M52) 2009 Land Rover Defender 110 HT 2.4 TDCi(Puma) |

This might be a stupid question.
How do I see if my VIN is one of those listed in the affected vehicle range? |

Second service (24000 miles) I highlighted a few issues with corrosion and clunky gearbox. Was told I needed a new gearbox and a new clutch. Both replaced, but in the process of replacing these they managed to scratch the drivers side wing and put 10-12 smallish (10p size) dents in the top of the same wing, probably from banging down spanners/sockets! Not good, now booked into the bodyshop for a respray next week, for this and to respray windscreen surround, upper bulkhead, lower front grille and the two lumpy things attached to the bulkhead where the windscreen hinges used to be.
Build quality is totally pants!!! But I still love it!!! Still need to sort out the corrosion on the side steps, hinge bolts, mirror arms and various rivets. |
