Its the rear brake pads rattling in the calipers. I'm on my second puma now, the first one did it - dealers changed pads and calipers - still the same, in the end they welded a small blob on to the back of the pads and that stopped it -
3 years later another new 110 and the pads are rattling again - dealers had it in twice to cure it - each time they say its been fixed, but off course they haven't cured it. You can tell by going over the same bump with the brake lightly pressed - no rattle. every 110 puma i see makes the same rattle. |

Yep brake pads, not only Puma's but had the same rattle on the last TD5 I had a few years ago too. Steve.

You guys have just answered a big question of mine. I thought the back end was starting to fall off. We have 16 speed bumps to leave our road and I take them at pace..... but the rattling was starting to worry esp after the steering damper fell off last month!! 1951 80" S1 2.0

Wow! Was gonna ask the same question as mine has started to rattle a little. Coincides with the fact that it's got new brake pads fitted. Craig Rogers

Excellent. I'll have a look... I fiited new pads to it only 1500 miles ago though and I'm sure I fitted anti rattle clips etc.
So would you expect this to be covered by the warranty I got from the LR dealer I bought it from ? Cheers, Superspoons |

I had a set of pads once, in the past, and there were long springs that fitted around the retaining pins, so they "pushed" the pads apart. I think this was on the front of my 90.
wonder if anything like that might help... anything to take up the free-play of the pad. |

The last time I mentioned it was on my last Puma and was told LR were looking into it but AFAIK the design remains the same as it has done for years. Steve.

Mine does it too. The real question I have about this is if this rattle is totally innocent, so we can neglect it, or is it necessary to do something about it? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I only notice it with the window open when driving over bumps somewhere where the sound can be reflected, like next to a building. Never caused any actual braking issues and hard to see that it would unless the caliper or pad backing became excessively worn. Steve.

My Puma's rear brakes rattled too. Solved the problem by fitting another spring to the retaining pins between the pin head and the caliper body . This added greater tension against the pin because thats what was rattling.

All of my Defenders seem to do this if the backs of the pads are dry. I'm always generous with the copper slip both on the pins and on the back of the pads which helps it stick to the piston and retract. 90XS Tdci John Eales

wow, spot on. SWAMBO kept saying she hears a rattle similar to a shopping trolley rattle.
Finally I heard it this weekend while we were on a gravel road. Going in for an oil change on Werdnesday, will ask the indie to check the rear brake pads. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
