Well I have not had much time to do anything on old Miffy recently, but today I did pop out to have a look at the rear differential with my trusty endoscope. This differential has covered a little under 250k miles and without removing it this was the only way to check its condition. Plus, there is a chance that it might be a 2 pin P38 diff rather than the stronger 4 pin. Or at least that is what the internet says...
So out with the fill plug and in with the endoscope... Well that answers the 2 or 4 pin question, it is a 4 pin diff centre  Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The oil looks lovely and clean Click image to enlarge And the crown wheel looks beautiful, nothing untoward about those teeth. Click image to enlarge The sun and planet gears look good too, perhaps showing a little wear (centre tooth) but nothing that is alarming. Well, I am not sure how actual that weakness is given Miffs weight, mileage, remap and use since 2002... Possibly an internet inflated weakness... A small thing and probably one that most think unnecessary, but I happen to know it is incredibly worthwhile when you are in need. I have had a number of winch covers in the past made of poly canvas and neoprene and all have degraded quickly or let the weather into the coiled winch cable.
So, I went and ordered a bespoke cover for the winch made of incredibly tough weather-proof and UV resistant material. Goodness it is tough stuff. I plan to cinch it in place with a simple elasticated length of shock-cord. If it proves to be way to big in practice then a little modification will be required. I actually had two made, the second for my (new to me) outdoor vice... Life without a shed or garage

Oh forgoodness sake... It has been gloriously sunny for days and come saturday it is proper raining down. Not just the stuff that gets you wet, but the stuff that soaks you to the bone
But... The anti-welsh weather barrier is working a treat  Test complete now turn the sun back on please?

Geobloke, can I ask where you got those orange pieces that sit in the jaws of the vice? Is it something to prevent scratching the item you are clamping? 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop
