Is that simple to do without draining coolant etc. or is it somehow controlled by the ECU? Sounds like an equally good solution ![]() (Still love my muff though ![]() But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I'm sorry BigMike, but I just don't get this.
With a standard thermostat opening at 89c, then it takes Xmins for the temp to get to 89c before the thermostat opens and allows coolant to circulate through the radiator. If you have a Winter Thermostat that opens at a higher temp then it will take X+Ymins, so longer until the thermostat opens. The engine will operate at a higher temp and so I presume the internal Heater will operate at a higher temp BUT it won't warm up any faster, just to a higher temp. Or am I missing something here. ![]() The point of a radiator muff is that it has an effect on 1. Cold air flow through radiator and hence 2. Cold air flowing over engine thus speeding up the time taken to reach the Thermostat opening temp i.e. X-Zmins . ![]() ![]() Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

Mike do you need to drain down the coolant first ? then change the thermostat .. IMHO a muff would do the job. when I was in CH I put a plastic sheet behind the grill to reduce the cooling effect and takes 5 mins to install cheers bpman |

IIRC, it used to be a lower opening temp in the summer to reduce over heating in high temps, and a higher temp thermostat in the winter to allow for a higher heater output. It was also common to completely remove the thermostat altogether in the summer time, which did lead to overheating issues as well, the reason being that the coolant was moving through the system that fast ( it was not restricted by the thermostat slowing the movement of the coolant) it was not getting time to cool down in the radiator. This was in the days of pre EMS engines so doing it now to a modern engine could lead to running issues. If a lower temp thermostat was used then the engine would never get up to operating temp causing the EMS to keep the engine in warm up mode as the CHT sensor would report this to the EMS. The fuel use would rise slightly as would emissions. And fitting a higher temp thermostat could lead the EMS to report the engine was over heating. The Puma would take longer to warm up when using a higher temp thermostat, and would never open when you where stuck in a traffic jam in the cold of the winter, as the cooling system is very efficient, hence the need for a radiator muff in colder climes.
The modern engine is designed to run at an optimum temperature utilizing the correct grades of oil and antifreeze to assist this, so why interfere with this set up by replacing the thermostat? JMTW, ![]() Brian. |

Those look as though they have a zip to keep it shut in the closed position. Not sure what provision there is for having the flap partially open. Steve. Yes something I thought too. I think if I do get one then I may go for the much cheaper one that MPS do as it can be half shut as well.

STOP! WAIT!
Even though my muff only covers the grille, the intercooler goes up quite a way behind it, doesn't it? With my muff done up today the 110 wouldn't go faster than 130 km/h (normally 150+) - it just ran out of power on the Autobahn ![]() Not enough airflow to the engine methinks? Probably keep with the card in front of the radiator then.

How far up behind the radiator does the intercooler go? (never actually looked ![]() Could it really have so much effect at air temp of 5 Celsius? Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

That's why the muffs have opening flaps so you can regulate the airflow. There has been mention about not totally blocking off the intercooler. Steve. One idea I have is to have a roller blind the same width as the radiator. Fix it to the bottom of the rad with a thin wire coming up through a hole made in the cowling. This you could tie off at four positions fully open, 1/4, ½, ¾ and fully closed. If tomorrows test run goes well I may well have a go at this.
