Mine is just fixed with black cable ties - very smart and works a treat Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Well, having started this topic I have now fitted a radiator Muff purchased from Paddocks. I used spring loaded cavity wall fittings which would work well on non-puma radiators but with the slatted design on the puma standard grill you had to tighten the fittings a fair bit, thus pulling the fabric into the grill opening. Very un-satisfactory an if you pushed the fabric/fitting in then it would lose its grip on the radiator slat.
So I used 2 lengths of aluminium strip. about 1" wide, covered in black tape for aesthetics only with 2 holes in each near the ends and pushed the bolts of the fittings through the strip and fabric then fitting the spring loaded fitting and now it fits well and needs a screwdriver to remove it. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Have just completed a 600+ mile round trip to Norfolk from S.Wales with the radiator muff on and closed. Quick warm up. Water Temp, according to Scangauge, stayed between 88 to 90c normal on my 90XS. Fuel consumption 10.6L / 100Km and the return trip was 271 m in 4 1/2 hrs, virtually all on motorway and dual carriageway at 70+ . So very happy with the result. Very smart
Also good to get the feedback about the water temp on the long trip. I am a lot more confident to leave mine closed now Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I've restored a few pre war cars in my time and one or two of them came with really nice quilted canvas rad muffs that fitted to the grilles by turn-buckles and had opening flaps that could be secured back with lift the dot fasteners. I've had others that had radiator blinds that worked just like a window roller blind which meant that pulling a cord on the dash would pull the blind over the front of the rad a corresponding amount - something like that wouldn't be too hard to fabricate for a Defender. Was there not a warning not to block airflow to the intercooler on earlier engines? I used to cover the grill on the 200 tdi but always left the intercooler uncovered. Would it not also apply to the Puma or does it not matter if the airflow to the intercooler is blocked? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

At least on mine, the bottom of the "main muff" stops well above the intercooler. When it folds down it fixes to pop studs so it doesn't go any further. Other designs fold/roll up, so no problem there either Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

I have been following this thread with great interest and as yesterday we darted down to Berkshire to deliver some Christmas presents. When we got back the mpg was 26.3 I was expecting a bit more (travelling at 60-65 mph) and so I wondered if putting one of these muffs on might help? As I don’t have one just hanging around I got some cardboard and reinforced the edges with duct tape with plastic on the front and baking foil on the back. I cable tied it to the back of the grill and went out for a test. It seemed to warm up quicker and the gauge remained at normal once it was up to temp but I thought I noticed a drop in performance. This I would assumed is because I blanked the inter cooler also, so when I got back I removed it and dropped it in front of the radiator and it has seemed to do the trick as performance is concerned. It only covers ¾ of the rad leaving the top ¼ free. I won’t know if the mpg will go up until Tuesday when I do my yearly trip up and down the country to visit all my best customers and drop some hampers off for them. I shall of course report back here.

With the air-con grill there is quit a gap at the bottom that is not covered by the Radiator muff. I certainly haven't noticed any decrease in power - can still take out X5's and Disco 3's on the Culverhouse Cross hill in Cardiff in 5th gear. LANDYWATCH
