PS: When you line up the cams there are actually no open valves so you won't mess anything up accidentally.

Those are valve seals. Did you get a complete head? Or, a bare one?

Have you examined the old head very carefully for cracks? I had to virtually polish the areas around the valves before they became apparent - just nice to know what the original fault was and all will be hunky dunky going forward!

To be honest I hadn’t, kind of thought I wouldn’t be able to see them
