PS: When you line up the cams there are actually no open valves so you won't mess anything up accidentally.

Those are valve seals. Did you get a complete head? Or, a bare one?

Have you examined the old head very carefully for cracks? I had to virtually polish the areas around the valves before they became apparent - just nice to know what the original fault was and all will be hunky dunky going forward!

Shocked Test drive day!

Filled with coolant, tidied the engine bay, ran up to temperature…well 67°c was the most sat on the drive, heaters hot and stayed hot!

Went on an 8 mile round trip with no issues, heater still stayed hot!
8 miles back again with zero issues, sat the whole time at her usual 87°c
No leaks, no oil, no noises, no smoke.
So happy my landy is back!

Thanks to everyone with their help especially ickle and jbcollier who have been so helpful from the star your advice has helped a mere heating engineer rebuild his engine! Thanks guys I owe you a few pints! 2023 Defender L663 V8

Well done yourself!

I'm a half-drink drunk so you'll get off lightly if we do meet up some day Wink

Was your engine ever remapped?

Just curious as head cracking seems to be a developing issue with longterm Pumas. The cracks are very subtle and the head will even pressure test fine at the machine shop which makes diagnosis especially tricky. I'm trying to work out whether it also affects Pumas that remained stock.

Mine was obviously chipped as it literally leapt over mountain passes and there was no speed limiter. It wasn't until I hooked up an EGT that I realized it was running HOT. Not the coolant, that never budged until it started pressurizing the system. Just the combustion temps were off the charts. Which, of course, is what cracked the head.

Thanks jb, it was daunting at the start but soon became enjoyable.

Would be nice to meet up some day, I do go to some of the shows.

Yes, it was remapped by BAS at Billing around 2013 ish, it had 2 remaps a mid for towing and a race for that extra performance. I only ever stuck the the mid tune which was plenty for me.
Also fitted the BAS intercooler to help.

Exact same as mine, small enough cracks to only airlock the heating circuit, before the head gasket was changed by the mech it would over pressurise the skim and new gasket helped for a while but ultimately the new head was needed. Me and my son like overland as much as we can so the remap was a good option for us.
Would be interested to know if non remapped are having the same issues.

What should the EGT be at? 2023 Defender L663 V8

Now that's a good question!

I have found a wide variety of answers and nothing absolutely definitive. Sure would be nice if Ford had issued a service bulletin saying, "Never exceed XX°." No such luck there.

First, make sure the EGT probe is installed before the turbo so you are actually measuring what you are concerned about. Earlier engines like the 200tdi and 300tdi seem to have a max EGT recommendation of 1200°F/650°C. That is for a continuous load from towing and/or a long climb. The Ford engines are tougher. Bell said 1300°F/700°C will not be a problem. The 2.2s run even hotter when undergoing a "re-gen".

I allow mine to get to 1400°F for BRIEF periods only, like a few seconds. Otherwise I stick to 1300°F.

I drive to the mountains quite regularly. There are few steep climbs but a huge elevation gain over the last 40 kilometres. Prevailing winds are head winds. So, driving, unloaded with a roof rack, at 120 kph into a 50 to 70 kph headwind, I was running 950°F on the "flats" and at max on steep sections with my speed falling to 110 kph. On the way back? Downhill with a tailwind? Hardly ever cracked 1000°F and mileage improved by 30% while maintaining the same speeds.

when mine spectacularly failed, Freda at Turners commented that they see a link between tunes and head failures, I'm not sure as I do a lot of towing and it failed at 230 ish K Km which I didn't think was unreasonable.

I was very impressed that there were the original honing marks visible in the cylinder bores through!
