Went to the Billing show for the first time and had the car on the G4OC stand. Really enjoyed the show and had trackside views of the loonies in the challenge cars, so glad the wind wasn’t blowing the dust towards us!
Managed to pick up a rear anti roll bar for a reasonable price and as we were camped right opposite the Alive stand, got them to come over and work their magic. First up was a quick diagnostic session which revealed a duff MAF sensor. New OEM one was fitted and then it was given a stage 1 tune. It made the drive home much more effortless and spritely. A few other goodies acquired on the way home included a new G4 plaque to replace my slightly butchered and faded one. Rear anti roll bar fitted, turned around and….. yes, the front hasn’t got one either. How did I miss that? New one en route along with a rear prop as the UJ’s were very worn. I was also sent a few old pics of it including when it was freshly decommissioned after the challenges with zero kit and then after a while with kit on but still looking tidy! Finally got to fit the front ARB today and where I live is full of roundabouts, I got to test them out. I have to say it drives a lot better now, less roll as expected but with a nicer/less ponderous turn in.
It has highlighted just how poor the old tired springs and front shocks are though. If my boosts sell, I may treat myself to some Old Man Emu’s…. Man maths and who needs holidays anyway? 😂 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |

Don’t throw that plaque away! I put it on as it’s very rare as it was one used as a trial one that was just fixed to the rack without the plaque mountings and those cut outs were to fit around the lights! Current

@stu - Don’t it’s in my shed with all the other rare G4 stuff I’m hoarding! The new one came from Ade (clubs old tech officer) along with bits n bobs. I’ve recently picked up a decent safety device rack for it too as the one on it is looking a little tired now. When it was in Scotland, I think the moss was preserving it. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

One job that I had been meaning to tackle was the wipers… they stopped working on the way to Billing and although some WD40 got them moving again, it was a job that needed looking at.
I unscrewed bits of the dash until I got access to the wiper motor and realised the bracket was a bit loose. The motor had slipped down and this meant there was just enough pressure on the gear/rack to cause it to stop movement. Moved the motor up to the alignment mark and hey presto… a nice simple fix and free too. After a fairly hectic couple of months, I’ve managed some fettling time on the Defender. The main objective was to sort the suspension out and as funds remain limited, I did manage to get hold of genuine shock absorbers and HD springs front and rear from PA Blanchards.
Galvanised turrets and mounts from crafted ovals were coated with hammerite to tone them down a bit. Despite near 30 degree heat, I managed to sort it all over a few days and the ride is much better. You’ll see from the pics that the springs had served their purpose and the front shocks were well past their prime. It’s riding well, not quite as harsh so job done. It’s going up to the lakes next week so hopefully it’ll handle the country lane nicely. Great job. It is a very satisfying job doing the suspension, bet it rides nicely now. Have you done the bushes yet?

I did all the bushes for the shock absorbers, the ones on the long arms are on the to do list along with steering arms and the steering box which seems to be leaking a bit. Simple as these things are, the list is endless! 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

Completely sympathise. I am also part way down what appears to be a very long list of jobs that need doing on a 2000s Defender

Click image to enlarge Had to spend a week in the Lakes, checking out houses for our move north. I brought the Defender this time as I wanted to check out the new suspension was working as it should, and it is. Maybe a little too soft on the rear but that could be because of the tent (needed for one last camping weekend) but it’s also comfortable and not crashy like the stuff I removed. Up here in west lakes, the roads are tiny and the dry stone walls high but this is where the Defender is better than my Discovery or Range Rover, you sit just that bit higher so better visibility. On the whole, its been great, even the run to the beach for fish and chips was enjoyable. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |

Still absolutely envious of your G4, love the colour. Anyway, what shocks did you fit to the rear of the 110?
Was it the standard 110 (STC3771) or 110/130 HD shocks (STC3772)? https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/STC3772 https://www.lrworkshop.com/parts/STC3771 My 2003 110 CSW came with the dual rated rear springs but the HD shocks to cope with the potential extra weight of 4 bodies in the back. The difference is noticeable between the two shocks in terms of stiffness. |

Ah, it was just the 3771’s but genuine LR items from PA Blanchards. The 3772 didn’t show up on a search but now I know they exist, I’ll bear them in mind if these aren’t enough.
Another G4 110 owner also has the helper springs on the rear which may be the way to go if the rear remains too soft. Tangiers is a good colour, I was talking to Nick Dimbleby who was the official photographer on the challenges and he said its just one of those colours that looks good or stands out in most environments. You never lose it in a car park! 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled. 2002 Range Rover G4 Event car (Australian leg) 2008 Discovery 3 G4 UK Selections car 1968 Series 2a |
