It was bad enough for my local main dealer's friendly senior technician to tell me about the problem when I bought my Puma. In 2010 he told me that they'd replaced "a significant number" in three years. The only thing they'd had to replace more of was the VCV.
He also told me that they were investigating the feasibility of fitting a grease nipple to the coupling with an access hole in the housing. That a main dealer was thinking on those lines on a vehicle which had been in production for only three years at the time suggests that it was a significant problem even then. |

Hi folks, Unfortunately, I have to update my post : the Ashcroft output shaft was good for 90 000 km. Last year it started leaking and now it looses so much oil - I changed the oil and it holds just the 1.5 to 1.6 pints below the spline It's the blue Ashcroft kit from 2018. What solution should I go for ? The original Land Rover spline did 60 000 km The Ashcroft spline did 90 000 km and I don't know if the upgraded Ashcroft kit is so much better ... |

No affiliation with Ashcroft, but as I understand, you claim a fail because it started leaking? Splines still holding, but of unknown state of wear?
As I am aware, Ashcroft redesigned the cup to the red type. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Yes, it started leaking and now it looses any oil above the level of the O-rings
It seems like the red Ashcroft kit is more a mechanical upgrade of the blue one, related to hardness and a tighter fit - that's what they say Down Under : https://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defe...ost2940846 If I compare photos, I see 2x 2 O-rings in the blue and the red kit : blue : https://www.lrparts.net/lrc1517-mt82-gearb...sions.html red : https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/produ...gallery]/2 That's what I found out so far. Now I'm wondering if the red Ashcroft kit really is an upgrade with respect to oil tightness ... |

Other 2 kits available in the market LOF and IRB. I have not heard how they perform. Puma 110" SW

Seems like the red cover uses thicker O rings on the shaft. Perhaps also to allow more movement between the cup and the shaft. When I bought my Defender it had quite a bad leak, and found that whoever fitted the Ashcroft shaft, cross threaded the cup and compromised the sealing. Btw, I do not think the gearbox oil level is that high. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

You have excellent eyes
Indeed the "red" spline seems to have bigger O-rings on the shaft than the blue one. The Germans even sell a replacement kit for these Ashcroft O-rings https://www.nakatanenga.de/en/vehicle-equi...shaft-mt82 ... so this seems to be a common issue ... P.S. Yes, the oil level (and even the filler hole) seems to be below the spline Click image to enlarge |

My transfer box was in for changing. So brought a new shaft for while we are in there. The mechanic, same one who fitted the first one is still trying to remove it. Says he has put seven hours into it now. He is now saying he is going to remove the back of the gearbox.
Does this sound right? |

Not sure what you mean by removing the back of the gearbox..with the transfare box removed you would be best to remove the extension housing between transfare box and the gearbox output..that will give as good access to the output shaft cup as you can get...short of removing the gearbox as well..

You can see "the back of the gearbox" on the photograph I posted on July 20 IMO you do not intervene on the gearbox. but you have to reove the spline from it (which can be a bit sticky - as shown on the photograph). There is a housing covering the spline (it has been removed and is not represented on the photo). You can see the holes for the bolts all around the gearbox. I had this done by an independent garage specialized on the Defender. I booked the truck in @ 10 am and I took it @3 pm. So the work can be accomplished within 5 hours. |

That’s what they have done now. Not sure what they were trying to do before. I think when we changed last time the original one just fell out because it was kanckered.
All sorted now hopefully back on the road tomorrow. 👍 |

I'm now on 108k on original output shaft, it must've been greased at least a little on build as that's decent mileage to achieve from what I understand?!
I am having it replaced next week along with the a frame ball joint (torn rubber boot) I have always had some transmission clunk at the rear somewhere (sounds like rear) diff oils changed with no scray metallic dirt in, half shafts replaced for LOF one piece & front flanges replaced for new and made no difference to the noise. I bought it from the original owner about 3k miles ago Absolutely love the thing just hope the a frame joint & output shaft replacement settle the clunks a bit |

Clunks are just part of the character of a Defender. But I have a LOF one piece output shaft and it significantly reduced the clunks.
With the posts of leaking Ashcroft shafts, I’m glad I went for the 1 piece LOF fit and forget..(so far) 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |
