Well, given the nature of the failure (hard to engage gears but no loud bangs, nothing catastrophic and able to creep to my destination after previously travelling 230km and at speeds of up to 120kmh), I thought my latch was giving up. Seems it was the Outputs shaft. For those who remember, this failed in Spain and I was obliged to have a new one fitted by LR Palma. As you can see, not a drop of grease and so it was only a matter of time before it failed. In numbers, 5 years and 35k miles. However, if you factor in Covid, I’ve driven 20% of what I normally would over the past 18mths, so in real terms (and with my usual mileage) this would probably have failed last summer. So four years. I do a lot of hills, quite a bit of towing, carrying weight etc, but this is pathetic. Good news is that thanks to a purchase from Daz110 and some super advice from DeeEss, it’s now been upgraded to an Ashcroft shaft and is looking mint. I also swapped the clutch, which whilst not dead, was looking thin on the two faces and one spring had a gentle wobble. Clutchfix clutch now popped in. So, fingers crossed, I won’t be reporting back here anytime soon.

Good question Dave, as they only gave me the shaft when I left Palma. Similarly, I think they might have only changed the clutch plate and not the cover as well. This despite my asking for both to be done properly (and as advised on here and by LR) and to provide photos of each stage undertaken but obviously never supplied. Ho hum. I now know what’s been done and now feel much better for it.

its a conundrum wrapped up in an enigma ...... the variability must be down to movement and misalignment and i think the lubrication might help but lack of it is a red herring as the root cause.Im starting to wonder if drilling and tapping two holes at opposite poles through the female and male part of the shaft and bolting them together might be a cheap way of reducing movement and wear of the splines? |

I think there is 12 months on Ashcroft parts but if anyone but one of their approved fitters fitted it any failure could be down to poor fitment.
I do have the Ashcroft part fitted by IRB all going well so far with no leaks and no clunks DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

has the ashcroft failed or the adapter shaft.
I suspect the warranty will be for the kit and not the shaft. Last edited by Caterham on 2nd Jan 2022 3:16pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I have the Ashcroft kit, and I believe it has already doubled the distance that was achievable with the genuine shaft... although to be fair, I replaced the female part because the splines that mate with the gearbox mainshaft started to wear, not the usual splines - I was lucky, caught in time due to an oil leak from improper fitting of the kit. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Hard to believe the Ashcroft kit has failed in such a short mileage. Puma 110" SW
