TD5 engine will transfer heat to retuning fuel so that's whey fuel cooler is part of the fuel system

fuel presser regulator set fuel presser at no more than 4 bar before it enters the head and injectors
fuel presser regulator can leak strong smell fuel drivers side at the back engine fuel runs down on starter motor Last edited by dorsetsmith on 26th Dec 2016 4:32pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Could the pipes have been put on the new fuel pump the wrong way? And the returning fuel is not going through the cooler so heating the filter? Don't know if it's possible, just a thought. Ray

first thing this morning took about 5 mins to start, clouds of white smoke ticking over sounding like missing wont rev,get it revving after a while proper clouds of smoke, leave it ticking over with bouts of reeving for 30+plus mins,go through all connections, fuses etc turn off .starts normal ticking over, its like the engine wont rev unless its flat out,up and down the by pass no smoke 70 mph but dont feel right very hesitant at low revs big flat spot before reving

1. Are you losing coolant ?
2. Oil level in sump incest ? i.e. fuel oil in the oil 3. Air in fuel system ? |

Just a few points from my (bitter) TD5 experience
The fuel diagram is very helpful here, the in tank pump is a two stage pump, it send fuel at low pressure to the filter which then will return to the high pressure stage of the pump, where it is delivered to the chamber in the head, this feeds the injectors with pressurised fuel pressure is regulated by the fuel pressure regulator which actually acts like a safety valve opening when the pressure is more th an 4bar and allowing the surplus fuel to flow back through the fuel cooler back to the filter via the non return valve in the fuel filter head, (pipe closest to the chassis at the front side of the filter head) this maintains a pressure of 4 bar in the head. Returning fuel has passed through the cylinder head that is why the returning fuel gets warmer as the engine is running, heating up the filter. If the pressure regulator lets go it can leak down the back of the engine block and or allow the fuel to return at a lower pressure, so the injectors don't have the correct fuel inlet pressure, usually starving the injectors of fuel at higher engine loads. Diagnostics won't tell you the state of the pressure regulator there is no pressure sensor in the fuel line, The bleed valve shown in an earlier post can get bolcked up its quite cheap and worth changing (I hate just changing bits but sometimes it works) Pressure regulator costs about £150 from Land Rover but the only working part can be found at about £30 ish on e bay, i don't see the point of changing the aluminium housing if you can put a pressure gauge into the line it will tell you if the regulator is good or not, it's pretty well documented just do a search. Injector seals (the copper washers) can and do fail when that happens the high pressure of the combustion blows past them and into the fuel rail in the head giving gas bubbles in the fuel which get sucked into the injectors or pushed back through the cooler and back to the filter. Yes there's loads to go wrong reading your story I think I would be tempted to focus on the fuel pressure regulator. Ray |
