can't believe I'm here asking this but...... for those at can recall (I've tried to forgot) I've had the odd issue along the way. any how I'm 98% convinced (or was) that things are /were sorted until just recently were something seems to be getting worse (certainly no better). pulling away from stationary and sometimes I get a kangaroo effect or the bit point on the clutch seems very short (kind of on / off). I've also noticed while driving along at speed that the odd gear change can be very sharp (thought it was myself to start with being lazy and not depressing the clutch enough but now think it the car not me) any thoughts or tests I can do to establish where the problem lies? Get shot and buy a Eurobox, it's the only way you are going to get a good nights sleep.
Seriously, if you have not already done so find someone local to you with a similar age Defender, have a go in theirs and get them to drive yours. An experienced Defender owner will soon be able to tell you if there is anything out of the ordinary with yours. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. I'd be lieing if I hadn't thought about getting a eurobox.....
the def is now running pretty well engine wise which after more than 2 years of moaning is a monumental achievement (thats to everyone for their suggestions etc along the way and IRB for the injector learn.....and myself for cleaning the MAP sensor ) now I just concerned that the clutch is on its way out ..........perhaps I should just check the clutch fluid come to think of it. I know serveral people have complained about the engine revs picking up to 2k rpm on gear changes, I had this happen just once and it was recently...........and the fun begins - what could it be? |

The 2k pickup is a feature of the 2.2's.
Checking the clutch fluid is easy and no harm in keeping a regular check, same applies to the other fluid levels. If it is still under warranty just drive it ....but that has been said before Steve. I beieve the engine revs / clutch thing is also on the 2.4's.
I've tried disconnecting the electrical connection to the clutch master cyliner and ......... the effects are quite amazing I am 'just driving it' as previously advised but it would be nice to know whats going to fail and be prepared for it than have an unpleasant suprise (like when we head off to Italy later in the year). ....hmm. I note a new def owner has moved in not too far from home. I might have to go knock on their door and see if they can give their opinion |

If "the engine revs / clutch thing" happens on the 2.4 it is an indication of a malfunctioning clutch switch. Test by disconnecting the switch (as you have done), but the sound of it your switch has packed up. A clunky/notchy and generally unpleasant gearchange "experience" (sorry, new-wave Landrover speak!) can be caused by many things on a Puma including clutch problems, but more commonly in my experience is down to backlash in the drive train. Any wear anywhere will manifest itself as clunks and jars/snatches when changing gear. It is more a feature that you have to live with by altering your driving style to accomodate than something you can fix. |

thanks black wolf.
I'll have to get round to testing the clutch switch again - it may perhaps be on its way out ?? regards the gear change - I dont think its back lash / transmission as such but more something seems to have gone wrong recently? after replacement clutch, input shaft and gearbox recently gear changes were great but something seems to have changed / on its way out now where's that eurobox |

I sure the gear change etc is getting worse.
had a look underneath and there's oil again to be fair there is only a very small amount on the transfer box so I'm hoping it nothing to worry about ( sleepless nights) but it does make me wonder - coincidence and all that ? remind me the transfer box is the one thats a pig to fill right? clutch..... I'm sure this is gonna be a daft question but....how do you know when there's enough fluid / its adjusted correctly? thanks. one last thing - and I'm sure its related. 55mph (from memory thats 1750 rpm in 6th). on along the motorway and I can feel vibes in my foot on light throttle - off the gas a fraction and it goes. back on the gas very lightly and it goes (or was it the other way round...? can't remember but it don't seem right) - I'll have to go check |

Dare I suggest? Chuck the stick shift in the scrap bin and fit an auto.
Checking clutch fluid is easy peasy lift bonnet (no not that one) unscrew top of fluid reservoir making sure that you get the one for the clutch and not the one thats bolted onto an object that looks like a miniature dustbin lid don't over fill cos it makes a mess. Uncas |

Someone suggested the clutch springs can sometimes get stuck....assuming this is possible I guess some lubrication would help?
Is it possible to spray wd40 or similar into the bell housing and if it's possible would it trash the friction plate permanently? |

DO NOT DO THAT!!
Most likely effect it will have is lubricate the clutch surfaces and then you wont be going anywhere fast and it will most likely wreck your flywheel or clutch or both. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

That's kinda what I thought
So if it is sticking only option is to do a swap out. |
