Yes! JSTFU and change it quietly. It'll be a small price to pay with all the other unecessary items you've splashed out on in the pusuit of excellence and quietness. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Driving home clash band gear changes but low and behold just come off the phone.....one of the bits down by the clutch slave cylinder is called a DAMPER!!! Could it be it damps the clutch action to make it smooth?

The Clash were on the phone helping you find the right bits you imagine you need for your Defender - I'm impressed! Steve.

The hydraulic restrictor for which I gave you the part number is the "damper".

It allows full flow in the "disengage" direction but restricts the flow in the "engage" direction. It is fitted because otherwise if your foot slips off the clutch, the massive torque of the Puma engine will destroy the driveline. Fitting the restrictor means that the clutch doesn't just bang in instantaneously, it takes a (very short) time as though you'd released it quickly rather than instantaneously.

I have however found that the restrictor can get bunged up, which means that the clutch actually engages more slowly than your foot is moving. I always double-declutch and there can be problems if the movement of the clutch doesn't keep up with the movement of your foot.

yes - thanks BW.

presumably ? it could also get stuck to allow full flow in the engage direction too?

Yes, but (a) it is probably less likely, and (b) in normal use you won't see any difference.

You could test it by letting your foot slip off the pedal. If the vehicle lurches into motion then the restrictor is restricting. If there a bang followed by a graunching noise and no movement of the vehicle, then it wasn't.

I think perhaps it might be best if you don't try this test!

if your lifting your foot off the pedal slowly , then the valve will make no difference at all , weather its there or working or stuck full flow

Hmm.....in that case i'm back to drawing. Why else then could pulling away and changing gears go from lovely n smooth to a sharp / sudden take up? This isn't just being a carp driver as the above symptoms can from pulling away slowly in first at tick over?

if you change the restrictor just match it to the connector between the slave and the restrictor. The bore and OS dia of them varies between manufacturer. Cheers

I think your Defender might have something in common with Stephen King's creation "Christine"!

?

thought I'd replied to this already?

no off roading. IRB did me a deal that to my mind was both exceptional and made perfect sense. rather than waste time looking for the problem and paying for parts and bear in mind there was a recall on the axle case, the diff was of the 2 pin variety and the components has all done 58k miles to my mind it made perfect sense, especially as I was having new shocks too.

any how job done and still not had a poor gear change yet (other than due to driver error) Very Happy
