thanks JST.
the symptoms are the same as prior to clutch change and the clutch was bleed before and after clutch change more than once in part due to the fluid looking really dirty. I have to say the symptoms are very much like it needs bleeding ie clutch fully depressed down and it feels like it's not fully moving the clutch plate. ie when slowing down I sometimes use the clutch / engine to brake and this should be a nice smooth operation (which it is at the moment) but previous ie before Sunday morning it would sometimes feel like I just let go of the clutch pedal and there'd be a very harsh take up on the clutch and sometimes not. looking back now I sometimes used to get a right old clatter when turning the engine off - in part that was due to the old clutch and loose / broken springs but it would also now seem that perhaps the clutch wasn't sitting right. sometimes it would be ok if the clutch pedal was depressed but not always however at the moment with the clutch pedal depressed it's and nice smooth non mechanical stop when turning the engine off? munch90 - I did wonder at one stage if it could possibly be weather related as it seemed worse when hot. a perfect example would be when I drove up to the lakes. although the weather wasn't hot it was a fair old drive and hence everything was quite hot / up to temp. come off the motorway and couldn't for love nor money get anything like a smooth get change. although non mechanica clanks the clutch was VERY on/off? anyhow the slight difference you mention is very much not the case. when I jumped in on Sunday morning the clutch immediately felt like something had broken it was that much lighter / smoother? I'm planning on getting the clutch master cylinder replaced - might explain the problems including the clutch fluid turning brown very quickly? ...SELL IT.....I'm in too deep with it now. I've got another 90k to do before selling it. |

change the master cylinder, sounds like seals have gone, esp if fluid is black. Cheers

Have you lubricated the pedal pivots? Made a big difference to the niceness of my clutch!
Remove the cover from the clutch pedal box under the bonnet and add a sparing quantity of light oil to the pedal pivot pin and the master cylinder rod clevis pin. |

yep new master cylinder is I believe order of the day.
I have several times tried lubricating....sometimes it seems to have helped other times not - I've tried huge amount of spray from above and below. Including rubber / pvc lubricant on the bit where the return springs sets on the plastic holer but never really helped. the smooth action comes and goes by it's own accord? |

Hmmmm, are you getting clutch fluid running down the pedal shaft as this is a classic sign of master cylinder seal leakage ....on the other hand this may just be another classic example of you flitting from one thing to another chasing what you to perceive to be an issue. Steve.

Steve,
I'll have another look but there's no obvious signs of leakage. I'm really not trying to have a go here but I do genuinely believe contrary to everyone's thoughts (understandably so I might add) that there is an issue. I also think I'm right in saying pretty every time till now where I've thought there to be an issue it's eventually come to light. I have no idea how but the clutch has suddenly become a lot lighter and with that has come progressive take up of the clutch rather than it being snappy? At the same time the gear harmonisation is working ie you can feather the accelerator and adjust engine speed to get a smooth gear change. I have on numerous occasions thought it was the clutch switching being faulty but it would seem there's a mechanical problem which was causing the switch not to function correctly. I just don't have an explanation for it other than I'm starting to think / hope it's something simple (hopefully just the master cylinder). |

And you'll probably spend that easily trying to get it right. Sorry Caterham I couldn't resist......from one paranoid to another, I recognise the symptoms I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

Faulty hydraulic restrictor perhaps?
Did whoever fitted the clutch replace it (and the slave cylinder) at the time? It's outside the bellhousing so easy enough to change. |

good call.
my MC seals were deteriorating without leakage resulting in int heavy clutch. and dirty fluid. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

so I think I'm up for (amongst other things) new rear A frame swivel, master cylinder and clutch hydraulic restrictor? yes slave cylinder was replaced. If I can also get the above fitted the weekend then I very much look forward to the results guess this would be the tool for the job? http://www.paddockspares.com/550732g-55073...lucas.html |

Googling this will show you what it looks like (and where it fits). Widely available throught all the usual outlets and seems to be about £25. |

thanks BW.
had a look and it almost looks like an adapter? presumably for the cost etc there's more to it than simply a hole through the middle? anyone know what it does exactly (the valve bit?) |

Bla bla bla I'm spitting feathers.....grr!
Driving home clash band gear changes but low and behold just come off the phone.....one of the bits down by the clutch slave cylinder is called a DAMPER!!! Could it be it damps the clutch action to make it smooth? |
