ok, i give up, i thought it was the A frame ball joint that had the bad change blame currently, therefore wrongly assumed rear axle. Cheers

I give up too?
I ain't got a clue. Either I've suddenly learnt how to drive after 4+ years of ownership or somehow there was something in the axle causing poor gear changes but I have no idea how? |

Has the old axle been investigated for faults since it was removed from the vehicle Wayne? Steve.

just to let you know i had a horrible clonk upon selecting a gear and turned out to be a problem with the gear selector mechanism, apparently a technical bulletin has been produced for it so they knew what to do, gear change is better than it ever was.

^^^For God's sake now you've done it, standby for another one of Caterham's multi page threads full conjecture and speculation Steve.

so I've been quiet for long enough ......
having done almost 75k miles over the last 5+ years I think I've got to the bottom of my woes (well some of them). perhaps someone can shed some light for me? my clutch pedal goes stiff to smooth and vice versa. in the early days it seemed possible that squirting some wd40 on the clutch pedal would make it operate more smoothly however I think that was just luck. What I can say is when the clutch pedal operates smoothly the transmission works nicely too. clear the clutch pedal itself can't impact on how the transmission works but the clutch plate / thrust bearing etc might. I'm 100% the clutch pedal is fine, there no creaking anymore and the master cylinder has been replaced. my thoughts are the thrust bearing is not operating smoothly and is getting stuck and this is most prevalent when the vehicle is hot. I'm also not convinced that the friction plate might be shagged and likewise the clutch hydraulic restrictor valve. I guess the obvious solution is to strip the whole lot out and replace the above components with new but just wondering if anyone has come across something similar? I believe the slave cylinder was replaced approx. 20k miles ago but the issues with the clutch have been the save seem new. Not knowing exactly how things are assembled etc is it even possible for the thrust bearing to not operate smoothly, is it more likely the clutch isn't moving freely but if it's the clutch then why as this is at least the second and possibly the 3rd yet the issue has always been the same. its the second gearbox but possibly the original restrictor valve but could the valve cause these problems? any help gratefully received. |
