My narrow track has had a simple bracket which extends beneath the handbrake to enable a breakaway cable to be fitted. I will post a picture later as it is a simple way to achieve this requirement. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

^ Your right does not really show it that well
This is better the thinner cable with a carabina type clip on it. Zoomed in from the trailer as I bought it. I'm planning on an extra chain with 'D' clamps also though |

OK, thanks. I really couldn't spot that!
From your description, am I right in thinking that the trailer end of that cable is attached to the bell crank on the axle? If so, it really doesn't do the job since although the brakes will be applied momentarily, as soon as the cable breaks (which it is designed to do and inevitably will do) the brakes will release again. The cable needs to be attached to the handbrake lever so that once the cable breaks, the trailer brakes will stay hard on. The problem with the Sankey is that there is no obvious simple way of doing this, but hopefuilly Ramsey's photo, when he is able to post it, will show a suitable method. |

Hello
My first picture is not the best and confusing The breakaway cable is attached to the back of the handbrake with two strange looking connections, will take a better picture as want to make sure its right |

In that case all may be well, but if you can post a pic when you get the chance we'll take a look and give an opinion!

I have the same thing on my MKIII Sankey the breakaway cable attaches to the handbrake mechanism which is on a ratchet so once pulled on needs to be released manualy.
Thanks for the explanation blackwolf I think I should maybe get a chain now as a further backup. |

I have this setup but think will also add a breakaway cable attached to the rear of my hitch plate and onto the lower swing arm of the hand brake mechanism. When this pulls tight the brakes will apply. I will make sure that the length of the cable is less than the chain.

^ that was my sort of idea as an extra saftey measure.
I have this breakaway currently is this attached correctly as I've done nothing with this but have a new cable ready to fit. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

yes my thoughts exactly. At least if the unthinkable happens the cable will pull on the brakes (my ratchet handle doesn't really engage properly so once snaps may no longer engage brake) however chain will hopefully keep it attached to the Landy pending emergency brown-trousers stop!

Just make sure that pulling on the breakaway cable applies the handbrake ratchet so the brakes stay on.
I sold my narrowtrack some years ago (unfortunately) so am working from memory, but I think the lever your cable is on in the photo above is the lever that the back end of the lunette pushes on, in which case although pulling on the breakaway will apply the brakes, they won't stay on when the cable snaps. If so, this does not meet the requirement. If I recall correctly you have to extend the handbrake lever itself downwards below the pivot on a narrowtrack in order to have a suitable attachment point. |

Today finally managed to get some stuff done on the Sankey. Happy days. Chain hoist from Lidl did all the hard work!
