Puma 2.4TDCi - Black Smoke - Diagnostics?

Hi guys, my first thread so go easy

I have just bought a MY11 2.4TDCi Puma 90 with 29k on the clock. I didn’t realise at the time of purchase but it produces black smoke plumes under acceleration which then increase quite dramatically when under hard pedal pressure.

The engine pulls like a train. There is no overheating although you could roast your hand on the exhaust tip. There is no engine hesitation whatsoever and no leaks from any component.

My initial thought is “fuelling” and perhaps there is something wrong with the pump or even one of the injectors. (One of the previous owners may have remapped it but how could I tell).

I have done the following things to attempt to rid my Landy of the smoke:

• Changed the oil for a Ford-compliant 5W-30 Semi synthetic type.
• Changed the oil filter and air filter. The oil filter was quite grungy when removed.
• Changed and primed the fuel filter.
• I have added 250ml of Redex injector cleaner to the new diesel.
• Removed all turbo and Intercooler piping to check for splits and fitment etc – nothing found.
• Checked and oiled the turbo actuator mechanism – nothing found.
• The MAF sensor was thick with soot so I have cleaned it accordingly.

Footnote: Would a Hawkeye Diagnostic tool or a fast idle test help discover the root cause?

If it pulls like a train, the black smoke may well be result of an unknown remapping. Is it possible to load back the original map, and then see if the smoke disappears? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You could try contacting the historical owner perhaps? Sounds like a remap of some descript as Eric stated.

Thanks for all of the replies guys; much appreciated indeed.

My 90 has had 3 owners by all accounts so I'll be able to establish the 3rd owner in the V5C and the first in the owners/service book. I'm thinking along the same lines as you though, i.e. a tuning map has been added without any other supporting mods.

I wonder if the likes of Alive Tuning would be able to supply a standard UK map. - Andrew -

You may have one of the maps from one of the forum sponsors already and you could be paying for something you already have albeit an earlier version perhaps? Contact them in the first instance and see if they themselves may have any records if you don't have any joy with the previous owners. That's a good plan. The car has been in the North of the country for all of its life so I'll drop BAS in York a note. I'll update everyone with the results.

I don't believe a BAS map would cause black smoke

Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Tend to agree with ZE defender. All of the site sponcers in this area are too professional to allow this and it my judgement if a problem did arise all of their customers would know that they could go back to them for remedial action. Most probably free of charge as they understand the real value of reputation and how a bad word gets around.

PS Not in the pay of any of them!

Main dealer could always load the standard map, I've been running the standard map ever since I've had mine.
I'm personally quite happy with it.

Early maps can easily be 'thrown out' by the addition of extras such as snorkels/rai, performance air filter, decatting etc. and black smoke, surging, and overboosting can occur very easily.

While your at it, inspect the inlet manifold for obstructions and the boost pressure sensor ( the latter can be cleaned gently with an old tooth brush and some brake cleaner). Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

If its black smoke it's over fuelling .. You could have a boost leak ..

Yep, you're right, thought as much good mate. I think the plan about me phoning around is a non-starter.

I wasn't aware about a map being thrown out so that's a good point. I've checked over the Landy and I can't find any performance mods so far.

Cheers Martin. The EGR housing and the inlet manifold are all sooted-up to heck. Can you point me in the direction of the boost pressure sensor please. I have ordered a new Puma CD Manual from eBay today (for £3) so I should be more informed soon enough. (He thinks, lol). - Andrew -

Boost pressure sensor lives on the inlet manifold intake pipe it`s self, it's about the size of a matchbox, (black thing with ford or bosch written on it). One connector with four wires going into it.

Make sure the o ring seal comes out with it.
For more information try ford transit / Mondeo dura torq black smoking. Theres loads of info on ford sites, along with how to`s. And horror pictures of how bad they can clog up with carbon / oil mixture.

Hope you`ve got some good soap !! Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
