Yes it will be interesting, I have explained all this to the dealers and they have said they want to fit new ones, I have said that being the case I want the old ones back as I brought them, I really don't think they have any idea what I am talking about.

Yes it has the 54mm wide radius arm brackets and anti roll bar brackets, I think it is up-to 2002.
I will post some pictures, it has clearly never been on a car and was apparently brought as one of several complete axles from LR that were stripped for parts, leaving just the cases, this was the last one the chap had left. Having measured everything up it does appear that the only difference is that the Panhard rod mounting is inverted compared to later ones and the hole is 14 rather than 16, if anyone knows otherwise please let me know. Yes, AFAIK the panhard rod brackets are the only difference. As you said, the change was around 2002. I think the later design makes the brackets stronger.

^ That sounds like a cost saving exercise, replace a brkt & welded on reinforcements, with a single piece part.
At the same time as rationalising the bolt sizes, from M14 to a common M16 size. I believe the the panhard rod itself was also changed at the same time. It used to be a forged bar (expensive), was changed to a tube with eyes welded on each end (lighter, cheaper). Maybe the whole redesign had something to do with the bush durability, they are well known for wearing and also changed for 2002 MY. I've never heard of the older panhard rod brackets failing or the M14 bolt. |

Post 2002 panhard rod bracket has an extra brace to the axle tube. But it also seems to be a bit further forward, probably to cater for the straight panhard rod, vs the solid cranked design for RHD Defenders.
My spare axle has some hairline cracks around the panhard rod bracket. Seen a bit of offroad, but the FW swivel flanges are still attached (and straight)  1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

You guys are lucky that some dealers still do the work for your affected axles.
I asked some of the more connected Defender owners here if the local dealer will support this recall, the answer was a disappointing we are on our own as only the McG lines are supported. Will most likely just buy the brackets and put them on for peace of mind. Or maybe, if time and resources permit, do one of the other methods of reinforcement or just get an entire, fully kitted out axle from Winchester Gears. |

For those contemplating in replacing their defective mig welded axle case with another Land Rover axle the order of preference of what axle to use would be as follows:
1. A Defender axle case from about 2002 till about 2009. This is an exact substitute with proper friction welded swivel flanges. 2. A 300tdi Defender from about 1994 till 1999, or a Td5 Defender from 1999 till 2002, or a 300tdi Discovery from about 1994 till 1998. This is nearly exact, except the panhard rod brackets are slightly different, but can still be used with minor modification. Alternatively the panhard rod brackets can be replaced with the later design, but cutting and welding is required. A Discovery 2 axle case is completely different. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black Last edited by Dinnu on 5th Feb 2024 4:02am. I think you mean 300Tdi to 1999 in your second point, not 2009.

That panhard rod bracket can just be drilled out to the correct size. I installed what I think is a 1999 axle into a 2002 defender and that's all that was needed.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge One other thing to consider is that axles can be handed (LHD/ RHD) or both. This has to do with the arm on the swivel where the drag link connects to. If the axle is both LHD and RHD there is an arm on each side with only one being used. |
