United Kingdom 2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Bonatti Grey
Land Rover tdci Letter
Hi

Had this sent to work today, as we have some in the fleet.

Just thought it may be of interest to those of you who own one of that age!

I have seen it talked about, but just interesting to see what LR say about the issue.

Had to duplicate them on the post as i was not to sure if some could be read or not, (phone photo!)

Of course, if you were to steam clean the casing prior to going into your dealership, and some EP90 accidentally got smeared around the weld and looked like it was leaking...... Whistle Whistle

Letter landed today.

Sounds like a right bodge rather than fix the problem its just a case of minimising the adverse effects......

And something of an understatement suggesting you might loose stability..... Shocked

letter here today too.

like blackwolf i grinned at the lack of stability comments.

will check mine over and see what it looks like!

bracket option is i guess a low cost reassurance option as they dont feel it likely to happen....? Cheers

Regards the comments about stability in the event of the weld fracturing, I wonder if the bracket also surrounds the flange bolt heads. If it does not then god knows what will happen when the brakes are used as there would be nothing to stop the now free end of the axle from rotating with obvious effects on the steering and brake hoses.

Another question which is not answered by the Q&A is what is JLR's liability in the event of weld failure subsequent to the fitting of the bracket? I would hope that in this case they would pick up the cost of any damage.

Also, got my letter today.

Seems that vehicles with HD suspension get a new axle case, those with standard suspension get the brackets.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yes, it definitely looks to me as though vehicle stability has been compromised and there has been a reduction in directional control.

Alternatively as a normal person might observe, it looks rather as though the b****** wheel's come off!

Mines now booked in for the 22nd has anyone had the bodge, sorry repair fitted, I phone both the dealer and landrover customer assistance to ask what would happened if the weld still broke , because although the wheel would still be attached by the marvel of retro engineering(bracket) I would still have a broken axle, the silence was deafening and I was told
"its been approved as an engineering solution"!

Anyone else a bit nervous of this bodge, sorry engineering solution? Whistle

It is an interesting situation (and I am sorry for those whose vehicles are in the affected range).

The reinforcing bracket is clearly intended (from the documentation) simply to retain the hub assembly in the event that the axle breaks rather than to prevent the axle breaking, since the paperwork states that with thebracket fitted a crack will be evidenced by oil leakage and abnormal steering behaviour, which, especially the latter, doesn't really seem satisfactory.

it is also not clear what happens if you have a bracket fitted and then the axle breaks anyway - will LR then replace the axle casing FOC for you, or will it consider that its responsibilities were discharged with the fitment of the bracket.

Has anyone actually seen one of the brackets yet? I would be interested to see a photo of the bracket prior to fitting to see how it actually retains the broken flange and hold the axle together.

It also looks to me as though fitting the reinforcement bracket may affect the turning circle since it possibly interferes with the lock-stops.

To keep it in perspective it is clearly quite a rare failure and the chances of it happening are small. The consequences however could be severe, hence no doubt the reason for it being treated as a recall. I wonder how many have ffailed in this way but not been reported to LR.

Called my dealer today and emailed the letters and link to this site as I have this model car . I'm told that their extensive searches , questions to LR and computer searching has shown NO PROBLEMS ON THIS ISSUE and no recalls . The only highlighted area is for Left hand drive European vehicles . Even after they shown your arrived today from LR letters .
Is there any more info please on this recall ?
