2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Santorini Black

Following this thread with interest. I have a 2015 110XS 2.2 and attached are the photos of my front axle in the suspect area. Should I be worried? Maybe they should extend the recall to the out of production date!!?

You probably need not be too concerned since your MIG-welded axle will have been built after the "problem" was corrected. The only doubt stems from the fact that noone outside Land-Rover knows when that was.

Understand. However, I'm with you on how the faulty 'stock' was dispositioned by LR from a quality perspective and what was done by their supplier to rectify the poor weld. Only way to thoroughly check integrity of weld seam is to x-ray which is clearly not viable in situ! That from an ex-aerospace engineer!

For peace of mind, why not fit the catch brackets?

I have a set fitted to my (friction-welded) axle for that reason, although I did fit them before it became public that only early MIG-welded axles were likely to fail.

Perhaps just a perception, but it looks like the later axles have a thicker bead of weld.

The reported incidents that I could find online and on this forum where all on the NS (for a UK car) flange. And that 2nd picture of the NS, the weld looks quite substantial, at least compared to the weld on my affected axle.

But as said, for peace of mind, you can install the brackets. Problem is that they seem to be unobtainable. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Although the original recall requires that the brackets are fitted to both sides, the original recall paperwork does state that only the nearside is considered likely to fail.

If I had a mig welded axle that is out of the recall range and failed to find a friction welded case as a replacement, I think I would had been tempted to weld in a reinforcing gusset between the axle tube and the flange (do not weld to the swivel Laughing ).

This is done in the Suzuki Jimny, and the Dana axle users such as Jeeps world, and should be easy enough to do without dismantling the axle albeit needs a skilled/certified welder for proper overhead welding and care not to heat affect the swivel to axle flange bolts.

I did not want to do it on mine due to liability as I have an axle from the affected range, and would invalidate JLR's responsibility.

^^ Agree completely.

If for any reason I was replacing the (friction-welded) axle on mine and building up a new axle (or if I was fitting a portal conversion Smile ) I would weld in gussets over the affected area and to the axle flange, as well as fitting bracing to the length of the tube in the style of the old military axles.

Undoubtedly overkill, but I like to err on the side of strength and "Brunellian" engineering (i.e., if it looks up to the job, it probably is up to the job).

Mine is allegedly going in on the 5th, to have brackets fitted, despite it already having brackets but that's another story as I just want it knocked off the recall. I did just today manage to get myself a new unused axle case for £500 so I will change it out at some point in the future, like Blackwolf and others I will however be refitting the brackets when I do the case change. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

If your new unused axle case is not a friction welded one you could get the welded gussets modifications Dinnu / blackwolf highlighted above undertaken before you fit it.

sorry I should have said my new axle case is Friction welded, clearly of a slightly older vintage as the Panhard rod bolt holes are 14mm rather than the later 16mm, so I will have to drill them out when I get round to fitting it. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
