This argument is a great example of where the motoring press is letting us down. Their reviews are based on stand alone impressions if a product and the only thing they ever get around to do comparative testing seems to be workshop tools
A sceptic would say this is to protect advertising revenue, but also to continue the steady flow of free stuff to the journos to fit to their trucks. A direct comparison would be easy, it's been done a hundred times with LED bike lights and there is no shortage of products to test. After that I'd like to see dyno tests of the different remaps, flow bench tests on "performance" parts' then thermal efficiency tests on intercoolers. www.td5.org |

Not sure there a roolz suggesting "one should state where their knowledge is"... But, for the record, I have not and never would presume to suggest my knowledge would "be seen as the greater knowledge base compared to the average person"! Like you, I can only assume, I am as unaware of people's backgrounds, especially when partaking of this here interweb thingy, as anyone else, so it would be rather foolish to under-estimate other's knowledge or experience... Eric's test is fundamentally flawed, in that it has at least one basic element that is notoriously unreliable, the human eye - particularly its scotopic acuity (night vision). This is especially so when any such comparison is attempted with varying colour temperatures, as I noted in my earlier response, and with varying levels of ambient lighting, which affects the human eyes transition from photopic to scotopic (day to dark) sensibilities. Any such attempt at a comparison, which by the way is truly comparing apples and pears, whilst it might satisfy an individual's quest to justify one purchase, or another, is hardly a test of the hard and fast data provided by a reputable manufacturer and should only be taken at face value for their own immediate needs... By the way, in partial answer to your first point, any and all of the information I have imparted is freely available to one and all, although some of its interpretation is a matter for the individual... But, to borrow, in part, a quote from another D2.net member... Without boring the knuts off you all, I have a modicum of experience in such things... Rog... The GREEN One... Now if you go on Microcat Live
Defender(A2) 2007- Special Vehicles Options 005 Vehicle Options Defender Halo LE. 005.090 You will find the Nolden Bi Led Headlights with LR 065432. However most LR dealers parts department are unaware of this and will not be able to quote a price on the Headlights. Now wait for the jokes about it not being LR as it does not leak Brendan |

This is interesting. Should have looked at this German forum earlier, which could have avoided much of the discussion in this thread.
A German site sponsor with a high reputation on the forum here and who are importers/distributors of both Nolden and Speaker, already end of October posted on the German Offroad forum a topic of the new EVO2, and most interestingly, added a pictures comparison of the Nolden versus the new EVO2 taken in what can only be described as representive conditions. I can only conclude that it supports my statements about the lumen numbers flying around here being useless until they are given at a proven comparable common denominator. The thread is in German of course, and while the German supplier makes some clear statements about what is the new standard as to LED headlamps, for those not reading German, the pictures comparison alone is quite interesting. I do think that's interesting and people will draw their own conclusions from what look to me, like directly comparable photos.
What they also seem to confirm is the very poor additional light offered by both units on main beam. For headlights costing as much as they do, I think this is a significant shortcoming. I've got Speaker Evos and you really have to have secondary lights to back them up on high, as you would also with Noldens by the look of it. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop Now a 2013 110 USW too. |

Have to say as I have had fitted, both makes of head light is that the Noldens high beam is actually a high beam with a decent spread of light and not the letterbox spread of light of the Speakers. Both head lights are excellent in low beam but the Noldens high beam wins hands down for me and so for that reason amongst others, the Noldens are staying fitted. JMTW

Fair enough but if I remember correctly from another thread, you have added a significant lightbar to help out the high beam?
Which I have to say looked Hugely effective. IIRC etc. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop Now a 2013 110 USW too. |

I fully agree with the above statement regarding High Beam, certainly with respect to the Noldens. I was initially very disappointed with the Noldens when I first fitted them but after a few months of use I do agree that Dipped Beam is better that what I had before. When it comes to High Beam however they are a real let-down and I am glad that I already had a pair of good quality auxillary spot-lights wired to High Beam (Hella Rallye 3003). ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Brian, I believe you only have had fitted the original first generation Speakers, not the EVOs correct? (As I have read from your recent sales thread of your never used EVOs) So a bit of apples and pears again here, comparing the first generation Speakers with the Nolden high beam production. I have read quite a few times from different sources that the first gen Speaker light output was not as good as the Nolden, but then we had the EVO, and now we have the EVO2, which reportedly has taken care of the too spotty high beam of the EVO, and now gives more comfort light at high beam too. In all honesty, the only one who until now can make credible statements about Nolden versus EVO2 is Peter from Naka as per his thread on the German forum. He made a real comparison in identical conditions, and that without using any lumen numbers which cannot be compared as they are given without common denominator. And I must say, the comparative pictures of Naka look very interesting, and confirm that with every new generation of lights, the manufacturers make another leap in quality and power of the output. Which is a good thing I think. Eric You never actually own a Defender. G'Day Eric. So, from the latest articles you've read, what you've seen etc,...which, in your opinion, is the better light? Pickles. |

I think the only real way is a side by side test , same road , same night , same camera etc etc
i keep thinking about led headlight , to be honest i dont need them as do low mileage , not a lot at night etc , really they would only be another gadget speakers are out because of how they look i think noldens would be the ones , but then someone says high beam is not if at all better then standard !!! my lights are relayed with nightbreakers nd clearglass lenses so still need convincing !!! are they 600 odd quid better ? |
