This is an interesting discussion.

From what I see, they all have whiteish lights almost like HIDs? If so, how do they perform in inclement weather (rain, fog, snow)? Isn't white light, in those conditions, counter productive to proper vision?

Not dissing them, I'm actually thinking about getting a pair (brand to be determined) eventually, but would still like to know how they perform across the weather conditions we all drive in. All the discussions thus far is how bright and how far they throw light.

I'm watching this and similar threads with great interest.

K9f, I have not heard of a single return of a Nolden light for any reason.

Cupboard, thank you. Nolden just uses the expression measured. JWS uses the expression effective lumens. Read JWS definition of effective lumens and it is a measurement by a photometric device of light output.

Hard Charger. Light colour is measured on a temperature scale, yellow being about 3000K, white about 6,000K and blue about 12,000K. An Led fog light will have a colour temperature of about 6000K, a low light output and important a low wide, short range beam pattern. Fog light are mounted low down.

With normal especially high beam large light output with a long range then in fog, snow etc you will get lights bounced back at you from individual snow flakes, moisture droplets etc

This is a good question. Two points to consider:

- The Led lights do not heat up, so in heavy snow beware of snow build up on the headlights itself. I recently experienced this and had to stop to take the snow build up off of my lights.

- On the other hand, visibility in the snow was surprisingly good with the leds, much better than anything I had experienced in the past. I think this has something to do with the precision of the light output, but am not sure.

And in proper Fog when and only time the lights should be on you should be on side light and front fog (that will slow you down)

Also a point to note given the leap in light tech LED & beyond Some manufactures do not even offer a front fog light even as an option

Anyhow back to the Thread Speakers Rock Thumbs Up

Kitoper, Truck Lite does a military option on their phase 7 lights which have a heated front lens option.

I am not aware of any other company offering this option in a 7" round LED headlight.

One of the new comers on the block might be offering this as an option however.

Thank you Brendan,

Great idea to have the heaters on the front- although I am not sure that I am ready to make another splurge on lights just yet, Wink plus with all the other advantages offered by the Noldens and only a few snow incidents per year, I will stay with what I have. Cool

Slightly Off Topic

If snow build up was to be a serious issue would it not perhaps be worth considering a modification such as Heatshot perhaps to keep the lights clear? Could be a cheaper option but not with JWS and the lower IP rating obviously.

K9F, have just noticed that Heat Shot is in Leeds. I think I even know the business park it is on.

Now next time I am in Leeds with some spare time I might just have to call in. Must admit I prefer doing business face to face with our suppliers/potential suppliers. Means we have some interesting trips at times Thumbs Up

I do not get around Leeds as much as I used to.

They should be able to cope with a small squirt of hot water on the lens, surely Laughing

I don't believe much has been answered here about how they perform in the rain at night, which is a frequent occurence for many people I think, statistically more so accross the channel, than here by the lake. Cool Rain and night combined mean that the black asphalt roads being wet do not properly reflect the light back, it basically bounces away as on a mirror, so a lot of emitted light is just getting lost for the driver.

When I was driving with my original lamps, i.e. the SVX clear Wipacs and the Land Rover upgraded halogen bulbs, driving in the rain at night was ok, but visible light on the road as said was poor.
Now with my LED headlamps it is surprisingly how well the road really gets lightened up in those very same conditions. The LED light is much much more visible on wet black roads.
Even more interesting comparison in this respect is with my wife's car which has factory HID (xenon) lights, the real stuff, not after market xenon bulbs. HID lights already are much whiter and much brighter than halogen lights, but at night in the rain, once again, the LEDs of the SVX remain far better than even those HIDs.

Well Mal, I presume your statement has to be taken with a Laughing Laughing , yes?
What has a heatshot which sprays some hot water on the front lens of the Speaker to do with IP rating? That is as if saying that each time I go to the car wash, water sprayed at higher pressure and volume than a heatshot would do, my Speakers would fog up. Prior to the car wash tunnel, I usually use the industrial high pressure lance with hot soapy water front on, which is stronger than the best home Kärchers and surely than a heatshot, to spray right on to the lenses in order to remove dried up insects, etc. Sofar, those industrial strength "hot soapy water shot" sprays have done nothing to the Speakers. Thumbs Up I think that even Speakers EVO and now 3rd generation EVO2 lenses are pretty impenetrable contrary to what you seem to be thinking. Whistle
Now, I must admit I do not direct the high pressure lance at my rear Le Perei SVX lamps anymore, as that has cost me some in the past. Rolling Eyes

Oh, sorry about this frontal shot below with clear non foggy Speakers, but with also those rectangular Hellas which you find so "pig ugly". Laughing Rolling Eyes

Without causing offence or wishing to get into a heated debate, those fogs do have great functionality and you are undoubtedly their greatest advocator and ambassador, but the look and style of your headlights are insignificant in comparison.

On each of your pictures the eyes are naturally drawn to the fogs that don't look as if they belong!

Your truck has the potential to have a beautiful front end presentation why blemish it with two such pig ugly warts that belong in the 70s or 80s? Bin them and get some decent aesthetically pleasing ones that will enhance the look and possibly give you equal if not better functionality.

The JWS do look better too in my opinion. Whistle

Well, the good news is, til further notice the fogs from the 70s or 80s are staying. Rolling with laughter

Here is where I bought them... amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005700901-Seri...+comet+550

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005700881-550-...H9QCCCSVM2

I was able to order them with delivery to a collegue in the USA, and then brought them back myself. But presume some of those sellers will ship overseas too.

Even easier, they are also available at amazon in Germany, maybe from amazon Uk too, but have not checked that.

I have a few pairs of those fogs in stock, both in white and yellow. For the next generation you know... Thumbs Up

Hello Eric.
As you appear to have a bit of knowledge about Hella Driving Lights, maybe you can help me.
A friend of mine is restoring a 1975 Holden Monaro Coupe. It is actually a "one off" vehicle, at one time owned by Monaro/Holden/G.M. designer Leo Pruneau.
Leo equipped this vehicle with Hella Driving Lights, which have 859GT imprinted on the top left corner of the glass, and have the word "Iode" down the right side of the glass.
Have you, or any of your contacts, seen a light such as this?
Regards, Pickles.
