Andy

Hi Andy,
Indeed, I'm talking about the Tdci a.ka. Puma engine Wink.
Sorry for the confusion but I see in many places this model also being referred to as Td4 and as I also own a Td5 I tend to use this to identify my Defender Laughing Peter,

Defender 110 StaWa - Td5
Defender 110 HCPU - Puma
Defender 90 Soft Top - Td5

If it goes meow when you start it up Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
If you look where the exhaust meets the manifold / turbo... there should be a cat...one of these

If the cat has been removed it will look like this Thumbs Up

I have heard that the non-cat Defenders still have the cat box but it's empty inside. Rolling Eyes Puma 110 SW

According to my VIN number, my Puma should not have a cat. But there is a cat box under the heat shield.

Someone else has told me that it is empty - LR uses the same parts in order to cut costs.

So, how do I check if the cat box is empty!???

I've just purchased a Griffin Stainless System, comes in four parts, lifetime warranty, detached stainless hangers so can be finely adjusted, decat pipe, no backbox and the centre box inlet and outlet pipes are straight not staggered/offset! The quality is absolutely superb, too busy at the moment as am away in dry dock to get it fitted but have arranged for the supplier to fit for the princely sum of £100! Takes a couple of hours to fit and front propshaft has to be dropped to facilitate removal of old cat (don't want it cut grinded to get it off). Will let you know how it performs/sounds! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thanks!! It is Douglass Motors who are going to fit it, they have just done one on their TD5 project vehicle that they just spent £15k on fitting every conceivable extra (need a stepladder just to see inside). Had to go see them to get my spare tyre for my Mach 5 and discussed bringing a pair of overalls and helping them fit ithe exhaust on the lift! They had no objections so with my assistance the job will be perfectly executed! Laughing After all it's my truck and I don't want a single blemish or scratch (put on by anyone else but me that is)! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Will do on both counts! Douglass had a TD5 system on a display stand and it looked great! As I like to see before I buy that's why I went for Griffin! Their website is a little dated with no mention of the Puma! James the owner was very helpfull and full of good advice! I got a good deal too as he wishes to get his system 'out there!' If it does what it says on the tin I'll let you know! Here's the linky fingy:-

The wheels on their TD5 Karlos makes ours look like tiddly winks! Think they may even be bigger than BigSteve's! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Griffin exhaust fitted today, extra torque noticeable and exhaust tone throatier especially uphill! Helped with the swap out and despite removing front crossmember and disconnecting the propshaft the cat was a complete b4st4rd to remove! Came out in one piece and have complete old exhaust system cluttering up my garage! Heat shield for turbo after removal of cat on to which it was bolted was a little insecure and rattling, quick trip to marine chandlers for a large stainless jubillee clip and a little alteration to the heatshield and it's resecured with no rattle! Job jobbed! Thumbs Up

As an addition - Did a prolonged journey and the engine runs between 6 and 9 degrees cooler! Suppose it's due to the catalytic converter that used to run cherry hot red no longer being there and the reduced back pressure! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Picture Addition....

Am awaiting extended front mudguard brackets from Entreq and once the rears are available in three to four weeks time will adapt new rear nearside mudflap to fit as exit pipe sits slightly higher than original.

On mine the O2 sensor is not connected & is hanging by the gearbox. I also banged on the cat itself and it sounds hollow, whereas on the A3, when you knock on it, it sounds like it's solid.
