Driving members!
As my 57 plate 90 is about to need its 4 set of rear driving members (always oem/gen) . Why can't I just weld them to the half shaft?
I must confess I can't see any reason why not ! So what do you all think....... Its never over in my land rover.

You can do it, but then it moves the wear from the drive flange end (easy cheep fix) to the diff end (difficult expensive repair)

I'd rather change 30 drive flanges than 1 diff and half shafts...

Upgrade to HD drive flanges and if you want get the HD half shafts as well. Would be cheaper in the long term rather than replacing the OEM flanges all the time and less risk of stripping the drive flange and half shaft splines.

I spoke with Dave Ashcroft over concerns I had of moving the transmission weak point to the transfer box after fitting his Torsen LSD diffs, HD drive shafts and HD flanges. What he said to me was that the half shafts would still take the torsion force rather than the diff or the transfer box when using the HD drive flanges and half shafts.

FWIW, There was very little movement in my OEM drive flanges after nearly 6 years and 50,000 miles. I put that down to replacing all the wheel bearings, packing them properly not long after I got the Puma, and as the hubs were off it gave me the opportunity to grease the half shaft splines at the drive flanges as they are fitted dry. I thought 300Tdi-onwards 90s had one-piece rear shafts anyway? Or did they go back to separate shaft/drive members for the Tdci vehicles?

Could fit the earlier shafts if they do fit, or weld them up as you say. I wouldn't worry about wear at the diff end, it's bathed in EP90 there so wear is very unlikely. The reason they wear at the hub member is because of lack of lubrication.

Thank you for your input. Flanges have always been well greased from day one,but still wear. I think I will probably try welding and see what happens. As we all know all defenders are different and behave in different ways.
I will post here in due course with the good or bad news.... Its never over in my land rover.

few things to bear in mind

normally to weld a half shaft you use a low hydrogen rod and vee the shaft to weld as weld will never be as strong as the shaft

if the heat penetrates to deep in the shaft it will become brittle

you haven't got much to weld to on outside as your only welding to the ring that holds the plastic cap as there is a recess the cap clips on to

you could weld the inside ,but if the flange is worn there is a good chance of welding it on wonky , you really need to use a new flange that isn't worn ( if using new then you may as well leave it as standard )

if I was stuck in middle of no where then yes I would weld it , if using for normal use then no wouldn't bother ( in 30yrs ive never had to replace one anyway )

hi all,,, just wanted to add my bit lol,,

you can weld the half shafts to the drive flanges but they will just crack the weld in time due to the movement between the two parts and the different metal make up of the parts,, grinding out and using lo/hy rods will help if done right but they will still crack back away in time.

if your 90 does not have abs then yes you can fit the older style one piece half shafts as used in the pre 2004 defenders, they are also the same shafts as used in the late discovery 300 tdi's. personally thats what i would do and have done in the past and it works fine Thumbs Up

I wondered that too , the abs pick up ring is on the back of the disc on the rear not on the shaft

its for two reasons,, firstly, a typical land rover attitude of it allows a small amount of play when the abs is (snatching) or to everyone else, working and thus lower the likely hood of failure of the shaft, and also the floating half shaft is stronger than the fixed ones and so less likely to snap in normal abs use.... seams funny that they do this as standard now but in the early days some of the disco 1"s fitted with abs still had fixed shafts but others had floating ones lol but then again this is land rover Laughing

I understand the thinking of having a bit play , but in practice i dont think it would make much difference with abs

plenty of cars/trucks now with abs nowdays that dont have play in shafts

very true but land rover has done this since way back in 1990 on the range rover csk when they introduced abs so there must be a reason for it,,, i do know what you mean though, most other manufacturers seam to be able to make drive shafts out of stronger stuff thats all lol,,, having said that, the toyota's we are moving over onto that abs fitted have also adopted the hd floating half shaft system too,,,,
