Sorry its took a while to update this one but i waited in the end to get a mid box replacment pipe as well befor fitting,
As others have reported fitting the decat pipe is a bit of a pain as the catalic converter bit is right up by the turbo, so removing the propshaft and the chassis crosmember needs doing first, other than that it was straight forward just a bit of wiggling to get it past everything, but you do need 4x new nuts, bolts, washers i also took of the heat shield for a few runs and everything was ok without it.

I also removed the large centre box as well as it seemed overkill on a defender and fitted a ss straight through pipe but left the standerd Landrover tail box in place for now until i can get a ss one.
You will need 5x 50mm m10 nuts and bolts for this as the landrover ones are captive bolts on the silencer.

This all went without a hitch the decat pipe came from Allisport and the mid pipe replacment came from BAS
on starting up the vehicle it does sound a bit more throaty but not excessive, bit like a V8.

When you are driving the noise level is no different than standard, unless you put your foot down then it defenetly picks up quicker and is slightly more noisy but sounds good.it also seems to drives more smoothly
will check mpg over the next few weeks to see if there is any differance.

sorry if it is a dumb question:

1)I understand to remove the cat I would need to replace the whole snake between the cat and the middle muffler? or just between the cat and the flexible joint?

If so, anybody got a better performance (excluding chips and remaps)?

2) why 2 mufflers? would it be to noisy without the middle muffler?

thanks

Aparently unless you're prepared to cut the old one off you have to unbolt the cross-member to facilitate removal of the orriginal cat pipe! Original ones are worth money so I'm told so the extra effort may be worth while! Supposedly there are lots of 'cloned pipes' out there? What that means I'm not sure as I thought they all have to be a certain shape to fit no matter where you purchase them TD5 Alive, Twisted Performance or BAS! Pete mentioned 'cloned pipes' in another thread!
I intend buying a complete system but not until warranty expiry! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I am now running standard tune and it makes a big difference. If you want to let the engine breath make sure it is breathing well on the intake also (K&N / ITG air filter will help)

Yeah, finally had a twinge of guilt when my dealer refused to drive it due to the dubious legality status of the wheels! I generally have an excellent working relationship and mutual respect and understanding with my service manager, a rare trait in this day and age I do not want to take the p155 or risk invalidation any further at this time! As most of you drive Puma's but probably had TD5's before, how are the experiences to decat a td5 and removing the big muffler. Does it really give more Oemph or is it just more sound?

Mine will change body very soon so probably a nice time to do this. Roel

hi all, can the original pipes be taken off and the insides of the big silencer and cat taken out??.
I also fitted a K&N filter direct to the turbo and routed a oblong hole for the MAFS to mount on, thus the engine managemet light stays off,

On Microcat it lists a NON cat front pipe, on receipt of mine back in 2007 when i was first tampering with the exhaust the non cat pipe from the outside looked the same as the cat version but it does not have any insides Smile

Hi all,

Is it really useful to replace the decat and mid-box on a Td4 Question

I know that on a Td5 the sound is really lovely once the mid-box is removed but since the Td4 is a completely different engine (with a much different sound in standard version compared to a Td5) I'm wondering if it is really worthwhile the expense Confused

In low revs my engine tends to have a very slow respone (EGR will have much to do with this I guess).

Helping it to breathe more freely might help to overcome this (partially) ... or not Question Peter,

Defender 110 StaWa - Td5
Defender 110 HCPU - Puma
Defender 90 Soft Top - Td5
