190,000 miles, 2007 DC 110, engine problems - 1 VCV, 1 chafed harness, 1 bolt on exhaust manifold persistently working loose. That's all I can remember anyway.

- wouldn't be the bolt cloestest to the bulkhead by any chance (ask me how I know). found a cure for it?

No, that would be too easy! It's the one at the other end, behind the massive ladder bracket that holds the alternator, serpentine belt idlers, and (if fitted) the a/c pump. As a further inconvenience, the thread in the cylinder head is now giving out, meaning that it will need a threaded insert fitted to repair. That means a ridiculous amount of dismantling just to get straight-line access to the hole in order to drill and tap it oversize. Grrr. Evil or Very Mad

At the moment I am living with the whistle, and if anyone asks it's induction noise and turbo whistle! It passed the MOT on Monday, anyway, so it can't be too obvious.

Incidentally, the correct bolts have non-removable dished washers under their heads to allow for expansion and contraction with temperature changes. I have a suspicion that many of the Puma manifold bolt problems actually result from the bolts being overtightened resulting in these dished washer becoming flattened. If you have a loose bolt, rather than simply tightening it up like a loony (the tempting approach), it is more sensible to replace it with new and torque correctly. To get a torque wrench on the front ones though you have to remove that damned bracket!

very interesting - thanks BW.

can't recall seeing the bolts you're referring too?

early days my heat shield bracket was loose - ok now except one nearest bulkhead keeps coming loose.

can't you just loose the bracket and heat shield? ran mine for a year or two without the heatshield. good luck.

A mere 20,000 here, on a 2014 USW, with about half of them to and around the heat of Southern France and Northern Spain. Its never seen a snow flake

Though to be fair I've also clocked up about 5000 in various courtesy cars ranging from a Peugeot 1litre to a 4.4 RR Sport.

Once its had its next visit to the dealers, next month, its off South again to test the aircon, get stared at and have people pose for a photo with it!!!! Its fairly standard, but at times abroad, I feel as though I'm driving a UFO as people look!

Ah, heat shield bracket bolts. I was describing the bolts that hold the manifold to the head.

The threaded hole in the manifold into which the bolt at the bulkhead end of the heat shield bracket screws is another trouble spot, since the thread fails. This has also happened on mine, and is a crass piece of design. I have a new take-off manifold to fit on mine when I do the threaded insert job I mention above, but I have also been trying to devise a replacement bracket that doesn't rely on a hole tapped into a cast-iron exhaust manifold, something which is always going to be troublesome.

I think that you probably could run without the heat shield fitted - it is a major source of rattles - but mine servers a useful function at MOT time because it, together with the cat heatshield which is still fitted, makes it virtually impossible to see that there isn't actually a cat fitted any more. Incidentally removing the cat lowered underbonnet temperatures (and driver's footwell temperatures) by a very noticeable amount.

Yes, a big masonry drill and some brute force and ignorance! Disembowel the cat! From the outside and with current exhaust gas analysers you can't tell it's been done! Thumbs Up
