I had the same a few months ago and mine was the stalk that does the dip to main. There is a small metal contact that connects either dip or high that had melted, take off the column covers and have a look.
Mine is a TD5 but I believe they are the same set up 2005 110 TD5 XS running Alive Stage 1 and a bit and other toys 1996 130 300TDi chip truck for tree surgery business |

That reminds me. Must wire in a relay to reduce the current on the switch. Here we go again, doing Land Rover's job for them

Sounds silly but check the bulbs as well. I had an odd experience when both dip elements failed together
found that out after I had checked all switches, relays, fuses etc. So it can pay to check the obvious first BM52 |

The main beams work from the stalk on flash (stalk pulled) but not on main beam (stalk pushed) so it can't be the bulbs. Thanks for the reply though, you still enjoying 4 gears that manage themselves? |

Oh Yes... Only today I went for a little wander along a green lane and then just had to go back the same way I ma also commuting more so traffic jams are not an issue any more. Cheers BM52 |

Same happened to me few wks ago . Traced problem to the 3 pin headlight plug ( the one that plugs into the headlight ) the metal clip contacts inside the plastic housing had spread open , crumbled and shorted causing the plastic to melt and no lights . Very poor quality and cheep nasty part .

UPDATE
Had land rover assist out. Checked fuses, relays, connectors and the main light switch, all seemed to be ok. Technician diagnosed fault in column switch, off to the dealers for repair. I have given them a list of other issues to work through; 1. Leak on fuel tank when full. 2. rusty headlamp rings (dealer pointed out that they are a no cost option). 3. Rusty front bumper (apparently this is standard fit to all defenders). 4. Radio interference when aircon kicks in. 5. Rusty rear crossmember. Now slumming it in a 2013 freelancer with all the toys. |

If that were the case, it would have been reported as breaking news all over the forum I think. Wishful thinking, that would be too much inventive engineering at the end of the current Defender's lifespan. Draw a line to the here much hoped for supercharged V8 limited edition which some report will be offered as a last edition.... I am afraid if they never could correct the lack of a simple relay for the headlamps, that the chances that they will put engineers on a job to safely shoehorn such a V8 into the Defender engine bay with all the required upgrades to transmission and brakes, etc. as pretty slim/non-existent. Afraid the headlamp relay remains just an after market job, but as you have seen reported in recent threads, there are options on the market, notably in Holland. Relay above OBD socket is for headlights according to the workshop manual. |
