Brake pads change. (And what are you now using)
Is it something best left to the professionals or can someone competent in DIY with a workshop manual do it? All of mine need changing and simple route is to get it done and by the local Indy but I'm just wondering how easy / difficult it would be to do it myself?

Thoughts appreciated. Thumbs Up No Guts, No Glory.

It is quite easy, but before you push the pistons in make sure they are not too corroded or they will seize up and push out the rubber seals that are held in with a metal ring which are a complete pain to put back in.

The pistons should be okay touch wood. Ibex - I know the pins you mean. I'd imagine they have to be replaced for new too wouldn't they? Also could be barking up the wrong tree here but do the rear of the pads need some copper grease on to help prevent squeaking?
Oh and finally OE pads for a full set are £118 Inc VAT cheapest price. Shocked Yet EBC around £45 +VAT what ever that is. Even more tempted now. Then there is Ultimax vs Greenstuff. Thud

So the general idea then is do it myself?

Thumbs Up No Guts, No Glory.

TRW make the OE ones. I got a set for £35 which included pads, anti-rattle plates, springs, pins and split pins.

VERY simple to do.

1. Take brake reservoir cap off (leave on but loose).
2. Remove 2 split pins (small ones).
3. Remove pad retaining pins (the springs will need to be removed now).
4. Using a screw driver ease the pads away from the disk- not too much but just enough to slide them out.
5. Remove the pads (note which way they and the anti-rattle plates are inserted)
6. Inspect and clean the pistons and inner edges of the calliper (Brake cleaner and small wire brush).
7. Push the pistons into the calliper (Keep an eye on the reservoir- if it has been topped up as the pads have worn it will overflow).
8. Insert new pads and anti-rattle plates- you can use copper grease on metal mating parts but can promote dirt to stick to it.
9. Fit new retaining pins (not forgetting the springs) and secure with the split pins.
10. Press the brakes a few times to take out the play, check reservoir level and fit the cap .

It will tke you about 30mis a side the first time and about 10mins after you know how Thumbs Up

Killer could then? Whistle Mr. Green

On a different note which pad manufacturer have most of you gone for and type? There's LR genuine. Mintex. EBC Green stuff and Ultimax. And of course TRW which Glyn has mentioned. Not really looking for an upgrade as such but that would be a bonus. Just so long as they're as good or better as OE I'm happy. No Guts, No Glory.

Considering Genuine is TRW I would say forget about genuine with it's extra £80 for the name.

EBC make good pads but never used them on a 4x4- I think there are a few members who have used them. Theey will all perform as well/ better than LR pads so maybe price/ availability will be the deciding factor.

Don't EBC also have reduced brake dust...... something to consider as a bonus Thumbs Up

EBC Green-stuff do indeed seem a good option. And yes Glyn is right I have read that too about there being reduced brake dust. There is various threads on here under a search about brake pads but nothing concrete to go on just the odd few posts here and there. Also IIRC correctly EBC have their own on-line shop direct too. No Guts, No Glory.

I had EBC pads and disks fitted to my wifes' old DII and they were excellent. However, i've always been told that they should really only be fitted as a complete set. I was advised against fitting Greenstuff pads to my Freelander unless I wanted to change the disks as well. Darren

I had ebc red stuff pads on my subaru and they were great even with stock rotors. Only time i heard about needing rotors and pads was when someone was trying to sell me a set. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
