My thoughts are that there could be a fluid leak of some kind? Spraying onto the mud flaps and causing them to perish. the ones on my 52 plate are original, as are the ones on my dads 1996 110 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I've never known them to crack before! An engine to TDi for!

My 2009 mudflaps have lasted amazingly well. The way i have achieved such success is too remove them and leave them in the garage. They still look like new!

HA Love It. I currently have one in my footwell and one just about hanging on. It's weird it seams to be just where the bracket ends, they crack and have split. Will take a picture tomorrow in the daylight. Can safely say there is nothing in that area leaking to effect them. Only rears on a 110 if that makes any difference? |

When mine went I cut the bottom couple of inches off the old ones and used them as reinforcement at the 'hinge' on the new ones - they've been on about a year and all good so far! Also used some big stainless repair washers when I bolted them on to the brackets to try to stop them flexing as much. I've got some pics somewhere if anyone's interested. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Do you tow anything like a caravan or box trailer? If so, the vortex created could be making them flap back and too and if dry they will eventually deteriorate. Or, have you had them bottom out in any ruts, stones, kerbs, etc.....
Can't think of any other reason unless they were cheap plastic ones put on by dealer instead of original LR ones! |

Original LR mudflaps - 4 yrs old and 40,000 miles. Still good, no cracks, but this is on a 90. LANDYWATCH

I'd had a set of Britpart ones put on when Matthew at Tayside Landrover did my chassis refurb in May. Matthew has offered to replace them free of charge for a pair of new Landrover ones.
Now that's good customer relations I think they burst because they were plastic rather than rubber? DRW I built a garage for my Mini With a place for everything and everthing in its place. Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum |

No havnt been towing anything like that.
Not bottomed out since I gave it the lift. They have no markings on them though so suspect them not to be genine. @Green Machine I like the idea of cutting the bottom inch off and using as reinforcements, though I'm not sure how the chevrons moulded in would effect it? |

The fronts went on mine a couple of years ago but the backs are just over 11 years old and still good. I do seem to catch the fronts more and the backs will seem to flex the mounting backet more so that's probably why they've lasted longer.

Do you mean the actual mud flap cracking or the rear 1/4 panel it bolts too?

@mk1collector: The actual mudflap rubber has cracked and failed.

Before you fit new flaps hammer a radius into the lower edge of the metal support by clamping it in a vice with a length of round steel rod and bending paer way round the rod - about 45 degrees.
