Rust proofing
Is it worthwhile having a 2008 Defender, which I hope to keep long term, rust proofed and if so can anyone suggest a reputable company. I notice a company called "before and after" based in Rugby regularly advertise in Land Rover magazines but a recommendation would be welcome. Thanks

Hehe. You've opened a can of worms without knowing it.

Rustproofing: Definitely worth it. Get it done within the first 3 years. I've not done mine yet (2 years) because: a, it appears to have quite a lot of gunk already in place, courtesy of LR (I notice that the amount applied has decreased significantly since mine was released in 07); and b, I am waiting until near the end of the warranty, when most of the bits underneath will have been seen to or adjusted or tightened. It is, however, next on my list of priorities to sort out the Waxoyl coating.

As for reputable companies, you'll get mixed feedback about Chris from B'n'A. Many people are dead against him (I think he must rub them up the wrong way or something). However, he's still in business, he has many loyal customers. He did John's G4 (LRO) in his patented 'Kleentec" and I had a look at it recently . Chris is now based in Rugby IIRC.

Another company that attracts a lot of positive feedback is Rustmaster in Peterborough.

Either will probably do a good job. It is definitely worth getting done by a pro in my opinion. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I agree, i have seen some of the jobs both from and rust master and they all were quality! I jsut could not bring myself to spend the money so did it myself. It's a very dirty job and every time I do it I tell myself this is the last time but always end up doing and saving the money LOL.

I did mine myself when it was new (to get the maximum clean area internal and external...you just never see it as clean again, even if you clean it)

When you do it yourself - you can track what has/hasnt been done and top up

Externally I have always used underbody seal and internally straight waxoyl...mix of spray and paint Mike

Have seen work by Rustmaster and Before 'n' After. Rustmaster work was excellent.

However, I have seen a vehicle that BnA did and I have to say, I was pretty appauled with it. I saw it about 2 weeks after it was done and the vehicle had not been offroad since and the finish was awful. There were big areas with no coverage and the spring hangers had been missed. The section underneath the rear tub by the back of the rear wheel arch still had dirt in it before the waxoil was applied, so it came off. All in all, I was not impressed at all. That was observed on a quick inspection. I obviously did not get a chance to see the inside of the chassis and the bulkhead, but overall, I was not that impressed with the work.

As I say, just an experience I have had. I have no bias towards any company at all, just giving an opinion on a couple of jobs I have actually seen and I am sure other people will offer their experiences too so you can build up a proper picture.

Hello...LRnovice
I had my Puma rustproofed from new, an o9 model and im very pleased with the job done.
I used an outfit in St.Albans. Herts - which is very local to me, the company is called 'Rustmaster'
The blokes name is Michael and was very helpful, he has a good website and uses good products.
Dont tackle it yourself, too messy.
I collected mine the following morning, parked it on the drive and no drips.!! Thumbs Up

Regards Jonathan

I had mine done by Rustmaster this week. They know all the places to squirt the gunge. Their cavity wax is great, far better than normal waxoil. It mists so will really cover every bit of the bulkhead and doors.

I took the door trims off so they could get a really good squirt. There was evidence that LR put a bit of seal in the bottoms of the doors, but it was terrible & will just trap water.

Take wellies and overalls and watch Trevor work. He does not mind and that way you can satisfy yourself that all areas have been done. I ensured that the door pillars and rear cross member were flooded. There are two rubber grommets by the windscreen wipers (for lh or rh drive I guess) take these out & make sure he squirts in here to really get the top of the bulkhead. Also take out the rubber bungs in the front jacking points. There is also a little black circular sticker on the bulkhead which can be seen with the bonnet open. Make a hole in here and squirt more in. The ends of the rear crossmember have a dividing piece (look down the end you will see what I mean) This bit would have been missed had I not been supervising, but they got every other orifice.

Don't hang around while the main underseal is applied, it is really messy. Wander off & feed the horses for an hour.

It is a really messy job, so worth paying for somebody else to do it. The cavity wax is not available to purchase, Rustmaster have the UK franchise on it. Normal waxoil is nowhere near as good for getting into the cavities.

If you use Rustmaster you may be able to get a better price by saying I sent you (chap with grey LR this year and blue last year) He did a good deal for me as a repeat customer.

Next job is to make up some well arch liners. I want to stop mud being thrown at the fuel pipes & rear cross members & the front footwells (why have the front wheel arch liners got cut outs exposing them?) Simple job with a sheet of ally & air cutters.

Let us know if you go to Rustmaster & how you got on.

Regards,
Nidge.

Interesting !
niglyn,

Thanks for the informative write up ! i find it usefull in that he doesent mind you loitering about and actually lets you advise on where else there may be a requirement for extra coverage !

I have every intention of getting mine treated before the salt is put on the roads again and have always been swayed towards BnA but i,m not sure i want to go discovering parts of rural england in a Fiesta armed with sat nav ?

I am old fashioned in that when a job is being undertaken i want to stand and watch !
Not only to make sure its done correctly but also to learn and advise people that in the future when i am asked which bits he did i can say all this and this and every other bit and then reckomend in the knowledge that you know what youre on about in stead of guessing and making urself look a tit !

Again,

Thanks. DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN

Travelled over from Ireland in March this year and had my 2008 110 CSW done at Rustmaster. Stayed to watch, absolutely top job, couldn't be more pleased. Also considered B&A but wasn't too happy with the amount of time and money spent in self praise and slagging off the competition at the time. That money has to be recouped from somewhere, namely the punter!

Had my LHD 90 done by Chris (Before&After) when new and I travel back and forth through Spain (South) on tracks on a regular basis. I can report that the Kleentec job he did on my vehicle is as good as when it was done 2 years ago. All it requires is a hose down (no need for powerwasher).
The problem is that he does the Kleentec in batches so you book when others book their vehicles for the treatment so it takes a bit of time. However, he does a great job. Expensive, but very good. He will inspect the vehicle after 5 years free of charge and put right what needs to be touched up.
Inaccessible parts (such as the bulkhead) are treated with waxoyl which he mixes with other agents.
I can thoroughly recommend his work.
PS: he won't do Kleentec in older vehicles as he offers a lengthy guarantee.

Thanks everyone for your advice. When I do decide to have it done I will post my opinion on this forum. Out of interest when the current Land Rover is phased out because it does not meet EU legislation does that mean there will be no serious off roaders unless the Iveco Massif (ex Santana PS10) is imported. Regards

i,ve just spoken to Michael at Rustmaster !

I mentioned yourself niglyn and i mentioned the website ! He told me that as an individual i would receive £50 discount having been recommended by yourself niglyn ! Thumbs Up

He did also say that as a group and if we were a forum we would receive 20% discount, he also mentioned that trying to get eveyone to sign up to it and pay a dipper is an absolute nightmare ?

That said i,m pretty sure that there must be say 10 people on here that have thought about having it done but never bothereed because of the price? i,ve seen these group buy things done on other websites but i dont actually know the ins and outs of it all but i would suggest either going yourself and getting 10% ! HAPPY DAYS..........

Or happier still getting a list together, all ringing up RUSTMASTER and paying the deposit and getting 20% discount, i have spoke to Michael he is happy to do this.
All you have to do is list your name on here and we will see what interest we get ?

Then when we have enough bodies ring him individually, book a time & date convenient to you and pay yor deposit ?

In theory it sounds like it could work ?

The price i was quoted was £440 ples the VAT with no discount, with a forum discount of 20% this makes it £352 plus the VAT

Much more reasonable..............

Oooooooooooops, just thought have i broken any forum rules here ?

And do i need to put this in another thread once the interest starts ?

Right i,m up for it,
