Okay had mine done at Foleys. They spray the underside, not with Waxoyl but with something by a company called Wurth - clear waxy stuff.
Could have done it myself but it really helps to: 1) Have a compressor 2) Have a vehicle lift system so you can see clearly what you are doing Only time will tell, but I'm happy with what they've done for the price. |

Has anyone used "The Wax Works" in Morpeth? Rustmaster is a bit far away for me.

Just had mine done at Rustmaster today.
They've done a pretty good job (as far as I can tell in the dark). I'll check it out in detail tomorrow. I bought a couple of cans of their hard wax and fine wax for top-up and additions. They removed all the LR top-wax that was on there (I had quite a bit on my 2007 110) before coating properly. I wouldn't have been able to do it myself as I don't have the kit to properly clean it, dry it, remove the waxy oils or reach into the bulkhead, doors or chassis. Very glad I've had it done now we're heading into winter. The sooner you get it done the better but anytime within the first couple of years should be fine. Just to add another question to an older thread... am I to understand that Land Rover don't apply any sort of rust protection to the Defenders post 2007?
I just picked up an 09 110, and I'm curious. I had a peek underneath, and it seems like just bare metal. |

They've stopped applying anything. The stuff they put on was only really for storage - it wasn't ever applied with enough rigour to warrant being called rust proofing. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Wow... I guess I'd better start saving to get mine done! There is only a bit of surface rust underneath mine, here and there. I'd not like it to go beyond that.
I'm amazed at the amount of salt that is used here, when it hardly even snows. I'm a recent import to the UK, and where I grew up the salt only came out when snowed. Even then, they tended to use sand more than salt. At least the other car has been rustproofed already... |

Any Moderators out there? Just an opinion would it not be prudent to amalgamate this thread with the 20% off at Rustmasters one? Two threads exactly same theme!

The very first question I asked was how much waxoil is used. Maybe he tries to impress me? I am hoping to hang around while its done and see what goes on and how many empty cans at the end 59 2.4 110 XS Utility 55 TD5 110 CSW Special Vehicle |

Had two done at Rustmaster. You just cannot buy the cavity wax that they use anywhere else. It mists & gets everywhere, which is exactly what is needed. I made sure the bulkhead was done well, they can get right up the door pillars to the windscreen, where LRs will rot out. Front out riggers and inside the rear crossmember are other grot spots.
The doors & bonnet are now steel. Knowing LR i'm sure they will rot out. Even the ally ones would bubble through in about 10 years. I took all of the door trim off, so the cavity wax could be 'splashed all over' and right to the top of the doors. Rustmaster can still get in there without removing the trim if you prefer. I also lined the bottoms of the doors with ordinary wax oil, which I pre-heated in a pan of water, otherwise water will sit in the join between the door skin and door frame. The door window rubbers seem to be particully badly fitted, with a big gap underneath. It is caused by the door being poorly manufactured. I removed the rubber (easy with the door trim removed) and gunged it with a mastic sealant, re-fitted the seal and removed the excess sealant, so now hardly any water will get into the door. There is a big gap between the glass and door trim on the inside of the vehicle, so the door cavity will still have plenty of ventillation for moisture to escape. It is the bits we cannot see where the rot starts, the outside of the chassis is not as critical as we can easily see it and blob on underseal where necessary. For peace of mind and hopefully a higher re-sale value I think a visit to rustmaster cannot be beaten. Don't forget to take some overalls and wellies as they are quite happy for you to stay and watch the process. |

Just back from Waxworks and I am pleased with the result. Waxoil seems to be oozing from the cavaties I can see and all the visible bits look well covered.
only managed a couple of quick pics but you can get an idea from them Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated 59 2.4 110 XS Utility 55 TD5 110 CSW Special Vehicle |
