looking at doing this myself money being the main reason, has anyone try'd putting the hammerite underseal on over the waxoyl, the idea being double coating with a more robust surface?

I doubt it would stay attached. Also - you don't really need a more robust finish - the wax goes pretty hard. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

There seems to be a lot of discussion about rustproofing and underbody/cavity protection - from those who have vehicles with a reasonable amount of factory coverage to those with little or none at all.
Has anyone taken delivery of a new vehicle in recent times and tried to send it back for rectification - LR seem to be quite inconsistent on this part of the production. It's common sense that rustproofing should be done as close to new as possible, but what effect does this have on the vehicles warranty etc. Any experiences ? |

Land Rover's official view is that they don't use rust proofing now. They no longer apply any protection to new vehicles.
Interestingly their position in late 07 was that the protection was only applied to "vulnerable areas" and wasn't needed elsewhere. Presumably that now means that these "vulnerable areas" are unprotected from new. Get it waxoyled. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

You are right there my 07 had just a few patches when it went at the two year point it had a lot of rust showing on the chassis. the 09 had no treatment at all so I did it myself. There were a couple of places that were showing bare metal If you have a new defender I would say undersealing it should be one of the first things that you do. Boy |

Sorry should have said the gun cost about £12 and the canisters about £3.85 each but I bought quite a few so got discount as I have other lr's to do at some point. You do need a compressor which if you have not got one you can hire cheaply or jsut buy one and get years of use out of it.

Ok thanks a lot
I think I found thread (using advanced search, check me out!) was it this one: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1315.html Don't own compressor, but its on the list of things to acquire in the game of life so could be worth an investment Need to get a Defender first Trying to find time to go chat with dealer (mainly on price, and partly on 110 test drive as its been a few years). |

As LR pointed out to me...it has a 3 year anti corrosion warranty if rust does show...how many that no longer have any underseal will go in at 5yrs 6 months?! Mike

My LR had some rust patches from new LR refused to cover it under warranty saying 'all landrovers are rusty from new' (which is actually true, but not acceptable). The dealer said they would waxoil it. When I asked how/when, they were not too sure, so I suggested they give me cash towards getting it done properly at Rustmaster, which they did
The problem with doing it yourself is that you can only really do the outside. LRs rust from inside out. It is easy to touch up the outside of the chassis but it is in all the nooks & crannies of the chassis and bulkhead where the problems start. The rear crossmember rusts from the inside out, no amount of pug put externally will help. My 300tdi lasted 10 years before the rust bubbled through the rear crossmember. The rest of the chassis was ok. the bottoms of the doors and corner posts were also bubbling (ally V steel corrosion). You can make up a lance to squirt waxoil into the cavities and even thin it with white spirit or heat it up to aid spraying, however it is a bit hit and miss. It is nowhere near as good as waxoil cavity wax, which you cannot buy. The sole UK importer is Rustmaster and they do not sell it to anybody else. When sprayed it mists and goes everywhere covering everything. My roof & bonnet was covered with a fine layer of the stuff, even though it was not directly squirted, just shows how good the stuff is at coating everything. If funds are short it would be far better to get Rustmaster to just do the cavities with their cavity wax and do the outside yourself. Machine mart sells a underseal gun & sealant cartridges to do the job. Be warned it is messy job. If you go to Rustmaster just take a look at the state of Kevin after he has finished a car I just swallowed the cost of Rustmaster as part of the cost of buying a LR. It gives me peace of mind knowing in 10 years time the chassis & bodywork will still be ok. The electronics & engine will probably be shot though oh and the transfer box & diffs...... |

I've just got the 110 back from Foley Sepcialist Vehicles who have waxoyled it for £125 and gave us a courtesy car for the day. They have steam cleaned it, dried it and waxed in and out of the chassis. Price was low because the car is not old and there's little or no rust.
They've used a clear wax and so it is possible to see through it to the chassis. I'm absolutely delighted with how clean they appear to have got the chassis. It looks like new and wherever i touch it has a decent coating of the wax in ever single corner i can get my fingers. They did it on the ramp and clearly this is a big advantage over doing it at home. For the money I will use them every other year. Sod buying 3 big cans of Waxoyl, warming them up, buying a compressor, cleaning the chassis with a hose, waiting for it to dry, getting oily black wax all over me and the drive and taking a whole w/e to do it. Cheaper and better done by Foley's IMHO. I highly recommend them. Appart from anything it's fun just being in their yard, nosing around expedition Defenders wall-to-wall. |
