MAF issue one week out of warranty
Ha...warranty ran out end of Sep. Last week car went into body shop as I reversed into a bollard (low and unseen).

Came back with MIL on. Anyway body shop was insistent on quoting to have MIl reset (and they kept insisting that my ABS light was also on, in spite of me telling them that it goes off after reaching 5mph).
Have a VAG405 by Autel for my Golf which whilst having VW and AUDI specific codes also has an OBD2 code reader - plugged in and it came up with

P0100 -Mass air flow (MAF) sensor/volume air flow (VAF) sensor - circuit malfunction Wiring, MAF/VAF sensor, ECM

Erased code and left it at that - that was yesterday. Took it for a spin all was well.
This morning MIL again. Same code. So I removed the MAF and spayed with some carb cleaner. Let it dry and replaced MAF and cleared code again. Took it for a longer drive, MIL stayed un-lit.

Anyway - looked on here and never noticed P0100 on its own, always with something else. Could dust etc at body shop have caused this? Is next step to replace MAF if MIL lights up again?

I'd see how it goes for now but if it keeps on going on and off over say a period of 6 weeks then I would just replace the MAF sensor. If you have cleaned it and still have the issue as you say I doubt you'll have much choice. On the bright side they are relatively cheap 30 - 40 ish and fairly easy to change. There are also some good guides and pictures on here to help guide you in change it. It's easy though.. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Fairly easy to change??? I'd say so, one electric plug and 2 screws. Just make sure you have the arrow pointing in the right direction. Cool

Yeah, agree, trivial to change. I did have to remove it to clean so replacing would be a doddle. Also noticed the "arrow" on it for the flow.

Any idea where I can get a replacement? And are these made by Land Rover? I saw one on FirstFour for about 40.

Also doing some research on here (Def2.net) P0100 is supposed to be an "untested" DTC so why the MIL?

For a replacement MAF I would choose from either Paddock spares. Or Duckworth LR (Site sponsor) Or Shukers Parts LR. All good prices all reliable. Thumbs Up TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

It is a untested dtc when the MIL is not illuminated. When the MIL is lit and P0100 is the only dtc logged then it is a tested DTC because it failed the self test hence why the MIL is lit. Any dtc to do with emissions, that logs a tested dtc will illuminate the MIL.

Also the Autel is VAG specific meaning it can read the generic faultcodes P0---, but not the manufacturer specific codes that apply on your Puma, P1----,P2----,P3----,U0----,U1---- etc. So you may not have the full story in what is causing the MIL as the Autel can only read the logged P0100 dtc.

The actual Ford dtc explanation for P0100 is: P0100 Mass or Volume Air Flow "A" Circuit

Some light reading on what a dtc is:

There are basically two types of DTC codes for OBDII Diagnostics:

Emissions related DTC's Tested DTC's
Type A

1. Emissions related.
2. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will be illuminated as soon as the error occurs.
3. Stores a freeze frame DTC after one failed driving cycle.( history DTC is stored )

Type B

1. Emissions related.
2. Sets a Pending Trouble Code after one failed driving cycle.
3. Clears a Pending Trouble Code after one successful driving cycle.
4. Turns on the MIL after two/three consecutive failed driving cycles.
5. Stores a Pending Trouble Code as a DTC after two consecutive failed driving cycles.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC Type A or Type B

The MIL will turn off after four consecutive driving cycles in which the diagnostic runs without a fault.
A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm up cycles without a fault.
DTC(s) can be cleared by using a scan/diagnostic tool.

NonEmissions Related DTCs Un Tested DTC's

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

1. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will not illuminate.
2. The ECM will record a DTC at the time the diagnostic fails.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm up cycles without a fault.
DTC(s) can be cleared by using a scan/diagnostic tool.

How to read a DTC Code

The DTC value will help you narrow down the specific component or module in question. A DTC has a standardized format that can be interpreted as follows:
The first part of the DTC is the Alpha Designator. The alpha designator will be:

B - Body electronics (i.e., door and hood latches)
C - Chassis (i.e., traction control or ABS)
P - Powertrain (i.e., engine, transmission)
U - Network communications for the different control modules

Second Digit - Code Type
The second digit identifies whether the code is a generic code (same on all OBD-II equpped vehicles), or a manufacturer specific code.

0 = Generic (The diagnostic codes that are required by law on all OBD II systems are "generic" in the sense that all vehicle manufacturers use the same common code list and the same 16-pin diagnostic connector. Thus, a P0301 misfire code on a Ford means the same thing on a Vauxhall, Citroen, Toyota or Mercedes.)

1 = Enhanced ( Each vehicle manufacturers also have the freedom to add their own "enhanced" codes to provide even more detailed information about various faults. Enhanced codes also cover non-emission related failures that occur outside the engine control system. These include ABS codes, HVAC codes, airbag codes and other body and electrical codes.)

Third Digit - Sub-System

The third digit denotes the type of sub-system that pertains to the code

1 = Emission Management (Fuel or Air)
2 = Injector Circuit (Fuel or Air)
3 = Ignition or Misfire
4 = Emission Control
5 = Vehicle Speed & Idle Control
6 = Computer & Output Circuit
7 = Transmission
8 = Transmission
9 = SAE Reserved
0 = SAE Reserved

Fourth and Fifth Digits
These digits, along with the others, are variable, and relate to a particular problem code error number

So let's diagnose a DTC, I've picked P0404-73 EGR control circuit range/performance: actuator stuck closed

so we have:
P = Powertrain (engine, transmission)
0 = Generic
4 = Emissions control
0 4 =This is the specific error code within Emission control. In this case the EGR control circuit range/performance
-73= This is a specific problem, in this case the actuator is stuck closed. P0404-72 means its stuck open.

Just my tuppence worth Thumbs Up

Hi Brian, thanks for the detailed explanation. Was aware the VAG is VW/Audi specific (I have it for my Golf). A nanocom is on its way to me so I should have the "full" picture very soon.

Will post on here what it says.

So after cleaning the MAF sensor with carb cleaner, the MIL has not come on again (yay!)

However, not that I have a Nanocom Evo, I plugged it in and found a few codes logged. Will post on here once I work out how to save them to a txt file.

If you want .txt type file just open Notepad and save from there. That's how I get that file type. Thumbs Up TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Ok damn MIL came on again. Nanocom came up with the following:

NANOCOM - PUMAENG.APP - PUMA ENGINE fault file

167B - 41
Fuel injector learning not done

missing CAN signal high/low switch
---
0100 - 64
Mass or volume air flow A circuit

signal plausibility failure
---
0404 - 72
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control circuit
range/performance

actuator stuck open
---
0299 - 00
Turbocharger A under boost condition

---
0234 - 00
Turbocharger A over boost condition

I note the MAF error still there - may try replacing the MAf - however it refers to the circuit rather than the sensor itself

Also anything I can do re EGR actuator being stuck open?
