Competition ??? No those days are long gone, I know what I like and that's what I'm trying to achieve. It is purely coincidence that I end up with highish RMS. Personally prefer quality over quantity Click image to enlarge The amp for the Subs. I am wondering about moving the rear speakers. The plan is to build a narrow box behind the bulkhead. I was thinking about moving the 6x9 into this, having a full width speaker box, and losing the pods in the rear. It will leave a square usable space, but I am not too sure about the effects on the accoustics. It is quite well baleced currently, moving them forward could then overpower the fronts. Both run off a 2 channel amp, even if I had full control over fader etc still unsure Your thoughts ??? PS mines a workhorse too |

How about leaving the back as is but adding as you say a bit more to the front. Yes, your adding a bit more power up front but equally if you keep the rears you not losing any back there it will be the same. I always try to go for high RMS and a quality brand too the only issue is is size parameters with finding the room to properly fit and also ontop getting the correct internal volume for a sub. Oh and of course it's got to look nice and not look like a sunday 5 min DIY job. The area behind the seats seem a good place for things like speakers but equally the idea's always done for as that is slap bang behind the seats so a bit rubbish really. 6x9's can't go in the sides of the cubby as the sub would push them around and distort the 6x9's cones in use which will sound awful and probably compromise the quality a lot. Of course also using the door cards on the front is an okay place but I've never liked to look of that much at all. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Can't do cubby mate, need the seat. The active sub sits behind the mibble seat which makes your back tingle after a bit, and now is pointless keeping as totally drowned out. Hence the reason to relocate behind bulkhead, in purpose built enclosure. plenty of room, but thought if I was to move the 6x9 forward you could do a neat job in one as opposed to add ons later.

True. At least if you sell the active sub if you haven't already got a different set up it will part fund it if you bought new equipment. (maybe you've already got it anyway) Main reason why I never went for an active as their primary design is for being small and space saving but their power is rubbish 50 - 100w rms often or not but of course to the un-trained eye when they put the max peak down people thing oh that's a good power but in reality it's much less. My sub is 450w RMS which would be the equal to about 5 normal active subs and I wouldn't mind even more power myself.
Regarding active subs (I know this isn't what you want) But I reckon this one is really worth looking and far more powerful that the Kenwood SW also nice design that fits in well with the Defender IMO Here: E-bay link Kicker active subwoofer Also sold by ICM who supplied all my Sub and Amp kit and gave me very kindly a discount on asking and post out next day by UPS. Would recommend. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Yes the little actives are great. I've had the alpine swe-1000 mounted on the bulkhead behind centre seat. It was OK when used with lesser speakers but cannot compete anymore so is pointless. Those boxes I made in the back give nearly as much bass. I need the growl now to complete the sound. Not volume, but that rumble, hence why I'm going for 2 10's in custom box. You cannot replicate that from 1 x 8" cone, need surface area.

Very true. That's like me I don't want or like high volume but the power is always good. The rear is ideal for big subs so probably something with a quick release cables would be ideal. Trouble is for me I'd be removing it every few days and it's not worth it. After all they aren't the lightest either. Couple of years ago had a play with a brand new competition Kenwood 12" and had it set up in a shed and nearly popped the windows out of it. Amazing though.
Wonder what a nice kicker 15" or 18" Solo X would be like. 3000w RMS with a Warhorse Amp. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Click image to enlarge Thats my thinking. Be about 6" wide overall and 6 " off the floor so practical no wet to worry about and length for long things retained. (in my case spirit levels etc.) Can achive the correct cu/ft for speakers in individual compartments. Would then cover with that rubber checker plate as before. The bit that bugs me is the mids facing backwards. Could turn them upwards, but then right by your ear |

Nice design! So your going to go for individual compartments then? Heard of that before but even your design would take up too much space for me as I use about every inch of the rear. How will you be sealing it may I ask? I used a special silicone and wood glue for mine. Wood glue just for bonding but the special silicone for sealing. No fume 0 acid I used to avoid damage to rubber cones being eaten into. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Loads of PVA me thinks. Yes there will be pressure, but not masses. Just think it will be neat and compact in one area. When I sit and work it out might be able to get it down to 5 inch wide.Individual compartments maintains a punch sound, No blurring as such. Again will be sealed enclosures as apposed ported to maintain clarity. That mono amp will only push 400w RMS anyways so it defo won't be the loudest

Ah right. Not too much less than mine. Mines a 500RMS but tested at 530 so not much difference. I'm quite happy with mine. But your right 6x9's can pack a punch. The top of the range Kenwoods are 120w each I believe and 500w peak. I've had a pair in the past and they are pretty damn powerful and certainly add a thump similar to a sub.
